Ah Gawd It makes me sick to thinkA
Of what I 'eard an' seenB
Poor 'Arry like a wet rag flungC
Across the wrecked machineB
An' Rose 'er far all chiner whiteD
Against the gory greenB
-
Now 'Arry Cox 'e drives a carE
For Doctor Percy GrayF
Ses 'e to me 'On Sund'y nex'G
The Doc will be awayF
'Ow is it for a little tripH
To Fernville for the dayF
-
'I know two bonzer girls ' 'e sesG
'Fair 'otties both they areE
There's Rose who serves behind the jointI
In Mudge's privit barE
An' Lena Crump who jerks the pumpJ
Down at the Southern Star '-
-
Now who'd refuse a Sund'y tripH
With girls an' all give inK
The car was there an' oil to spareL
To rat would be a sinK
An' who'd refuse a dropp o' boozeG
When pals is flush o' tinK
-
Wot all the courts an' papers sayG
Can't add to my distressG
Rose with the blood upon 'er faceG
An' on 'er crumpled dressG
An' that poor champ who got the bumpJ
Ah Gawd 'E was a messG
-
The girls 'ad stout at ten mile outM
An' we was drinkin' beerN
I swear they lies like 'ell who sesG
That we was on our earO
For or we was both I take me oathP
As sober as me hereO
-
Now Lena was a dashin' pieceG
'Igh spirited an' flashQ
'Twas plain enough to me that dayG
That 'Arry'd done 'is dashQ
An' Rose Ah how 'er eyes did stareL
Rose was my speshul mashQ
-
It's easy now fer folks to talkR
who might have done the sameS
We meant no 'arm to anyoneT
An' 'Arry knew 'is gameS
'Twas like a flash the skid the crashQ
An' we was not to blameS
-
I wisht I could shut out that sightD
fergit that awful rowU
Poor Rose 'Er face all chiner whiteD
Like I can see it nowV
An' 'Arry like a heap o' clothesG
Jist chucked there any'owU
-
They ses we painted Fernville redW
They ses that we was gayG
But wot come after dull's me mindX
To wot them liars sayG
We never dreamed of death an' 'ellY
When we set out that dayG
-
'Twas ev'nin' when we turned for 'omeS
The moon shone full that nightD
An' for a mile or more aheadW
The road lay gleamin' whiteD
An' Rose sat close aside o' meS
'Er face turned to the lightD
-
Wot if we sung a song or twoZ
Wot it they 'eard us shoutM
Is song an' laughter things to curseG
An' make a fuss aboutM
'Go faster faster ' Lena screamsG
An' 'Arry let 'er outM
-
I'd give me soul jist to fergetM
Lord how 'er eyes did stareL
'Er kisses warm upon me lipsG
I seen 'er lyin' thereL
Blood on 'er face all chiner whiteM
An' on 'er yeller 'airL
-
I never took no 'eed o' paceG
I've been on twenty tripsG
An' Rose was restin' in me armsG
'Er cheek against my lipsG
A precious lot I dream of skidsG
A lot I thought of slipsG
-
I only know we never thinksG
I know we never dreamsG
Of folk walkin' on that roadM
Till sudden Lena screamsG
An' after that the sights I sawG
I've seen again in dreamsG
-
We never seen the bloke aheadM
'Ow can they call us rashQ
I jist seen 'Arry move to shoveA2
'Is arm around 'is mashQ
I seen 'er jump to grab the wheelY
Then Lord there came the smashQ
-
Aw they can blame an' cry their shameS
It ain't for that I careL
I held 'er in my arms an' laughedM
Then seen 'er lying' thereL
The moonlight streamin' on 'er faceG
An' on 'er yeller 'airL
