From Camoweal to Windywoe from Windywoe to ThirstyvilleA
We'll drag the line around the map along the plain and up the hillA
Scross the desert to the swamp across the swamp and up the riseB
'Our ' Sacred Rights must be preserved 'our' claims you'll have to recogniseB
-
One night while others were abedC
With weary eyes and aching headC
I pored for hours and hours upon a mapD
Till dots and lines began to swimE
'Suggested routes' grew blurred and dimE
And then I think I must have had a napD
-
-
But with a start it seemed to meF
I sat boolt upright suddenlyF
And gazed with staring eyes before me straightG
For there upon my inkwell's brimE
With aspect most grotesque and grimE
Methought a large fat hairy spider sateG
-
-
'Good fellow you behold in meF
An insect of repute ' said heF
'I'm that State Insect so much talked aboutH
I've frequently been mentioned inI
Such papers as THE BULLETINJ
So you have beard of me before no doubtH
-
-
'You've recently ' pursued the bruteK
'Been pondering upon the routeK
Of our Transcontinental Railway LineL
I do not know what views you holdM
But if it be not deemed too boldM
I'll just acquaint you with a few of mine '-
-
-
Then suddenly the creature droppedN
Heels over head and downward floppedN
Into the pot and floundered in the inkO
I calmly thought 'He'll drown no doubt'N
But presently he struggled outN
And sat once more all dripping on the brinkO
-
-
'Ere I proceed to illustrateN
The views of each protesting StateN
Thus did the beast address me from the potN
'Please understand I representN
All phases of State discontentN
In me is concentrated all the lot '-
-
-
Then quickly from the pot he crawledN
And ere I could prevent it sprawledN
Upon the map I cursed at him in vainP
And as he went and left behindN
Long inky smears all crossed and linedN
He chanted this preposterous refrainP
-
-
'From Drouthyhurst to Dottytown from Dottytown to ThirstyvilleF
We'll drag the line around the map and o'er the plain and up the hillF
With here a twist and there a turn and over here a wide detourQ
Our claims you have to recognise our prejudices must endureQ
From Boodle's run to Foodle's pub our Sacred Rights you must preserveR
From Foodle's pub to Doodle's dam the int'rests of the State to serveR
Insanely crawling through the map and in and out and to and froS
If you'd propitiate the States this is the way the line will go '-
-
I seized a pen in angry hasteN
And with a curse the creature chasedN
From off the map then looked and cursed some moreT
But 'round the corner of the potN
The spider peered and said 'What rotN
I don't see what you've got to curse me forT
-
-
'I will explain if you'll permit '-
It said but in an angry fitN
I banged the map and yelled 'Upon my wordN
You've crossed and lined it back and forthU
But one straight line from south to northU
Does not appear Your system is absurdN
-
-
'Suppose ' I said 'invaders cameV
Here in the north How in the nameV
Of thunder could we quickly move our troopsB
How could we rush our army forthU
Into the unprotected NorthU
With all your crazy twists and turns and loops '-
-
'Good fellow I have yet to learnW
That it is any State's concernW
To meddle with Defence ' he made replyF
'That is the Commonwealth's lookoutN
They'll get 'em there I have no doubtN
But as for us we've other fish to fryF
'Yet if you really want to knowS
Which way the troops will have to goS
Once more I shall be happy to explain '-
And as I planned his sudden deathX
The creature drew a long deep breathX
And sang again this maddening refrainP
-
-
'From Drouthyhurst to Dottytown from Dottytown to ThirstyvilleF
We'll drag the army 'round the map and o'er the plain and up the hillF
With over here a wide detour and here a twist and there a turnW
And if they never meet the foe it isn't any state's concernW
We'll drag 'em miles and weary miles from Foodle's pub to Boodle's runJ
The while the foeman gains the North without the firing of a gunJ
From Boodle's run to Doodle's dam o'er kink and curl and loop and curveR
Our int'rests you must recognise our Sacred Rights you must observe '-
Again all haste I made to grabY
A pen this time resolved to stabY
The loathly insect in some vital spotN
But though with murd'rous aim I hitN
'Twas wasting energy for itN
Eluded me and dodged around the potN
-
'Aha You're not the first of menZ
To try to slay me with a pen '-
It sneered 'They try in vain I still surviveA2
And now I go to make a leagueB2
And weave a web of State intrigueB2
That will enmesh you all if I'm alive '-
-
-
Then with another wicked sneerC2
The creature seemed to disappearC2
I searched in vain the thing had vanished quiteN
And though I laugh and talk and thinkO
And go to church and take to drinkO
I can't shake off the horrors of that nightN
-
For still that ruined map I've gotN
All sullied o'er with smear and blotN
The sight of which calls forth a frenzied screamD2
And since that night I've counsel soughtN
Of learned men who surely oughtN
To know but all declare it was a dreamD2
-
Yet when the views of PHILP or WADEN
Within the Tory press displayedN
Assault mine eyes I seem to see quite plainP
That ugly spider fat and squatN
Perched insolently on the potN
I seem to hear again the weird refrainP
-
-
'From Drouthyhurst to Dottytown from Dottytown to ThirstyvilleF
We'll drag the line around the map and o'er the plain and up the hillF
With here a kink and there a curve and here a needless wide detourQ
Our claims you have to recognise our sacred int'rests must endureQ
For Boodle has a bit of land and Foodle has much influenceB
And Doodles cattle must be trucked whatever happens to DefenceB
So down it goes by Snoodle's road from Snoodle's road to Noodle's WellF
Aus tral i an defence be blowed Austral i a may go to Hell '-
