I saw him stand a Polar manA
Cold anger in his frigid eyeB
Facing it wild unruly clanA
Who poised their fiery shafts on highB
-
Strangely his very coldness fedC
The angry flame 'gainst such as heD
For in his wintry face they readC
Antarctic immobilityD
-
The niveous hauteur of that faceE
Bespoke the brumal inner manA
And in its chill hyemal graceE
His pose was quite SiberianF
-
His haughty and hibernal gazeG
Seemed like twin icicles to strikeH
The whole man was in many waysG
Peculiarly cucumber likeH
-
His algid and unruffled browI
Gleamed frostily and as he eyedJ
His raging foes he seemed I vowI
Gelidity personifiedJ
-
His Greenland bosom bulged with prideJ
A manly bosom 'twas withalK
And as he breathed with glacial glideJ
I watched his waistcoat rise and fallK
-
I marked the Arctic arroganceL
With which he faced his foemen boldM
Bleak was his mien clay cold his glanceN
Some vowed his very feet were coldM
-
I saw his savage foemen poiseO
Their fiery javelins on highB
They made a fearful lot of noiseO
'Slay Slay the Iceberg ' was the cryB
-
And then as by a single handP
Propelled I saw the keen shafts flyB
And on that manly bosom landP
'This is his funeral ' thought IB
-
Nay by my halidaine What's thisQ
Upon his breast the hot shafts beatR
But with a fierce and baffled hissQ
dropp all innocuous at his feetR
-
Unscathed he stood the Man of IceS
Each shaft with torrid anger firedT
Just spluttered feebly once or twiceS
Then ignominiously expiredU
-
One look he gave them that was allK
It made his shiv'ring foemen feelK
That wintry blasts swept through the hallK
Then turned on his hyemal heelK
-
One word he spake one icy wordT
No man among them stood exemptV
It froze each listener who hearW
With hyperborean contemptV
-
It froze them with its brumal blastX
Like avalanches there it rangY
Then through the door he calmly passedX
And banged it with a snow clad bangY
-
So frigidly he won the dayZ
And when the blizzard blast was o'erA2
Lo nought remained to mark the frayZ
But shafts deceased upon the floorB2
-
And as I passed into the nightC2
I heard one baffled foe averA2
''Tis sheer futility to fightC2
An iceberg with a Lucifer '-
