The Idle Son Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDCD AEFFECC BEBGHHCHC AIJJIKK

Young Benjamin left school this yearA
And stepped right in a jobB
And he starts in hope of a life careerA
Like his eldest brother BobB
But Sam the lad who came betweenC
Born in the fateful year 'thirteenC
Still vainly seeks a placeD
And the mark of his fate too plainly seenC
Dawns in his listless faceD
-
For Sam was born in a black yearA
In the year of the world's black rageE
To rob his youth of childish mirthF
And another curse was on the earthF
In the year he came of ageE
War and depression this grim twainC
Have clouded life for a bright young brainC
-
Life smiles for Benjamin and BobB
Each lucky in his ageE
But the count of years falls ill to robB
Same of his heritageG
Too old for a youth's apprenticeshipH
Untrained too young for a man's firm gripH
Tho' a man in stature grownC
He lives to see his chances slipH
Thro' no fault of his ownC
-
For Sam was born in a black yearA
In a black year came from schoolI
But we who know past years of easeJ
Hold stern responsibilitiesJ
Ere his youthful ardours coolI
Ours is the duty ours the taskK
To yield what youth has right to askK
