It was the schooner DesperateA
That sailed the southern seaB
And the skipper had brought his little daughterC
To our centenaryB
Blue were her eyes and plucked her browD
Where she wore a golden curlE
Yet 'spite her looks she was somehowD
A shrewd observant girlE
-
But and spake an old sailorC
Who had been that way beforeF
'I pray don't land at yonder portG
Lest your girl count it a boreF
Last year the town had a handsome streetH
This year no street we see '-
'Why ' asked the skipper 'Poles ' said the tarI
And a sneering laugh laughed heB
-
For an alderman had spokenJ
Who had known the ropes long sinceK
And he said 'Where are them sticks an' ragL
We had for that other PrinceK
Let's stick 'em up in the street again '-
Said the mayor 'Don't be a quinceK
We'll have some new bright painted onesM
And let the aesthetes wince '-
-
'Father ' the skipper's daughter criedN
'No fair city I see '-
'It is behind them decorations lassO
Them candy sticks you see '-
'But father why do they stand thereP
All orange smeared and redQ
Like garish clowns in a stately street '-
'Search me ' the skipper saidQ
-
'Oh father What are those nightmare thingsR
Those gadgets brightly litA
Let us away on urgent wingsR
Or I fear I'll have a fit '-
'Courage my child ' the skipper saidQ
Curb your aesthetic senseS
And close your eyes and cover your headQ
And I shall bear you henceS
-
'Come hither come hither my little daughterC
And do not tremble so '-
He wrapped her up in his seaman's coatT
'Come ' said he 'let us goU
Out where no poles or pylons areI
And no centenaryB
To a scene that no man's hand may mar '-
And he steered for the open seaB
