The Genesis Of Gloom [australian Variety] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHIJJ KLMMNN DDOOPQ RRSSTTU

Once upon a time in days remoteA
A politician bought a voteA
The price he paid is not quite clearB
But probably a pot of beerB
Secured his end But he got inC
So folk excused this venial sinC
-
-
Now if the thing had stayed right thereD
We might have dodged a load of careD
But pots of beer soon failed to serveE
The candidate of dash and nerveE
And with cold cynicism cameF
The urge to organise the GameF
-
-
Soon the political machineG
Beheld the profit it might gleanG
Thro' gifts spread thro' electoratesH
To help the 'Outs' the 'Ins' frustrateI
While shrewd 'Ins' not to be outdoneJ
Increased the offers two to oneJ
-
-
Later the craftiest M P 'sK
Perceived that loans from overseasL
Might help them hand out cakes and aleM
Upon a most colossal scaleM
And Parties with each other viedN
To spread their largesse far and wideN
-
-
Railways were built from here to thereD
That served no purpose anywhereD
And public works that did not payO
Like mushrooms sprouted in a dayO
With promises were issues foughtP
And whole electorates were boughtQ
-
-
Millions and yet more millions flowedR
To go the same old easy roadR
Till with a dearth of easy cashS
The game was up and came the crashS
'Tis pitiful but there you areT
With pots of beer in some back barT
This evil had its genesisU
