The Genesis Of Gloom [australian Variety] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHIJJ KLMMNN DDOOPQ RRSSTTUOnce upon a time in days remote | A |
A politician bought a vote | A |
The price he paid is not quite clear | B |
But probably a pot of beer | B |
Secured his end But he got in | C |
So folk excused this venial sin | C |
- | |
- | |
Now if the thing had stayed right there | D |
We might have dodged a load of care | D |
But pots of beer soon failed to serve | E |
The candidate of dash and nerve | E |
And with cold cynicism came | F |
The urge to organise the Game | F |
- | |
- | |
Soon the political machine | G |
Beheld the profit it might glean | G |
Thro' gifts spread thro' electorates | H |
To help the 'Outs' the 'Ins' frustrate | I |
While shrewd 'Ins' not to be outdone | J |
Increased the offers two to one | J |
- | |
- | |
Later the craftiest M P 's | K |
Perceived that loans from overseas | L |
Might help them hand out cakes and ale | M |
Upon a most colossal scale | M |
And Parties with each other vied | N |
To spread their largesse far and wide | N |
- | |
- | |
Railways were built from here to there | D |
That served no purpose anywhere | D |
And public works that did not pay | O |
Like mushrooms sprouted in a day | O |
With promises were issues fought | P |
And whole electorates were bought | Q |
- | |
- | |
Millions and yet more millions flowed | R |
To go the same old easy road | R |
Till with a dearth of easy cash | S |
The game was up and came the crash | S |
'Tis pitiful but there you are | T |
With pots of beer in some back bar | T |
This evil had its genesis | U |
