It knocks me can in this ere game uv lifeA
A bloke gets born grows up looks round fer funB
Dreams dilly dreams then wakes to find a wifeA
An' fambly round 'im all 'is young days doneB
An' gazin' back sees in 'is youth a manC
Scarce reckernised It fair knocks in me canC
-
Ther's me I never seemed to mark no changeD
As I mooched on through life frum year to yearE
An' yet at times it seems to me dead strangeD
That me uv old is me 'oo's sittin' 'ereE
Per'aps it ain't 'E was a crook young cootF
While I'm a sturdy farmer growin' frootF
-
But all the same 'e wouldn't back an' fillG
An' argue with 'imself an' 'esitateF
Once 'e 'ad seen the way 'E'd find the willG
To go an' do the thing 'e 'ad to straightF
That's 'ow I was an' now Ar strike a lightF
Life gits so mixed I can't git nothin' rightF
-
But wot's the use A bloke 'as got to ownH
When once 'e 'as responsibilityF
Ther's certin games is better left aloneH
Wot might be done if 'e was only freeF
Ther's certin things Oh wot's the flamin' goodF
A 'usband alwiz gits misun'erstoodF
-
It's no use hintin' If yeh want it straightF
Me an' me wife ain't seenin' eye to eyeI
All ain't been peace an' 'armony uv lateF
An' clouds is comin' up in our clear skyI
I ain't to blame an' yet no more's DoreenJ
It's jist 'ard Fate 'as shoved 'is oar betweenJ
-
All marrid blokes will understand me wellK
I ain't addressin' no remarks to thoseL
' o've learnt but 'arf uv life The things I tellK
Is fer the ears uv fellermen that knowsL
Them symperthetic 'usbands 'oo 'ave 'eardF
The fog 'orn soundin' in the wifely wordF
-
Fer when stern jooty grips a 'usband's 'eartF
That's me an' eggs 'im on to start a sceneJ
That's like to tear two 'appy lives apartF
In spite uv all 'er carin' That's DoreenJ
Why there you 'ave a story that would makeM
A bonzer movie with a bit uv fakeM
-
But 'ere's the plot When my pal Ginger MickN
Chucked in 'is alley in this war we wonB
'E left things tangled fer 'e went too quickN
Fer makin' last requests uv anyoneB
'E jist sez to the world when last 'e spokeO
'Look after Rose ' 'E was a trustful blokeO
-
Rose lives in Spadgers Lane She lived them daysP
Fer Mick's returnin' When 'e never cameQ
If she lost 'old an' took to careless waysP
Well I ain't sayin' she was much to blameQ
An' I don't worry till I 'ear she's tookR
Or thinks uv takin' on to ways that's crookR
-
Although I'm vegetatin' on a farmS
I gets a city whisper now an' thenT
An' when I 'ear she's like to come to 'armS
Amongst a push uv naughty spieler menT
I gets the wind up This is all I seeF
Mick was my cobber so it's up to meF
-
That's all I see quite clear with my two eyesU
But marrid blokes will understand once moreE
When I remarks that marrid blokes is wiseU
'Oo 'ave the sense to take a squint through fourE
Four eyes is needed in reviewin' plansV
Their vision's broader than a single man'sV
-
But when them four eyes sees two ways at onceW
Gets crossed Ar well ther's things in marrid lifeA
For which a hint's enough fer any dunceW
Ther's certin things between a man an' wifeA
That can't be quite But take this fer a fackR
Don't start things uv a mornin' It ain't tackR
-
That was me first bad break I should 'ave seenJ
The supper things washed up an' 'elped a bitF
An' then 'ave broke it gently to DoreenJ
Promiscus like I jist 'ad thought uv itF
But I done worse I blurts wot I'd to sayW
Upon the mornin' uv a washin' dayW
-
There's gumption fer yeh eight years I been hitchedF
Eight years uv trainin' an' I fall down flatF
Like some poor love sick softy 'oo gets switchedF
Fer tellin' 'sweetie' 'e don't like 'er 'atF
When she's jist come frum 'avin' rows no endF
About it's trimmin' with 'er dearest friendF
-
I owns me ta'tic's crook But all the sameS
Ther' weren't no need fer certin things she saidF
Wantin' to do good acts don't call fer blameS
Even on tackless 'usban's eight years wedF
A bloke 'oo jist suggests a 'armless planC
Don't need remindin' 'e's a marrid manC
-
'Struth Don't I know it Can I well fergetF
While I still 'ave two 'ealthy ears to 'arkR
Not that she torks an' mags a lot but yetF
Ther's somethin' in 'er choice uv a remarkR
That gets there worse than yappin' all day longR
An' makes me pure intentions look dead wrongR
-
It seems it ain't right fer a marrid blokeR
To rescue maids I starts to answer backR
But got took up before I 'ardly spokeR
An' innercent designs is painted blackR
I calls attention to the knights uv oldF
But tin knights an' romance iist leaves 'er coldF
-
I read 'er meanin' plain in 'er cool eyeI
Aw strike I ain't admirin' Rose Wot MeF
But when 'er look sez 'Rats ' where's the replyI
A man can give an' keep 'is dignityF
It can't be done When they git on that layW
Wise coves adjourns the meet an' fades awayW
-
That's wot I done I gits out uv the 'ouseW
All dignified An' jist to show 'er 'owX
Reel unconcerned I am I starts to rouseW
Me neighbour Wally Free about 'is cowR
Wot's got in to me cabbages an' etF
Close on a row uv 'em I'll shoot 'er yetF
-
A batchelor 'e is this Wally FreeF
A soljer bloke that come this way last yearE
An' took the little farm nex' door to meF
When I gets mad 'e grins frum ear to earE
An' sez 'Cool orf ' 'e sez 'It's plain your woolY
'As been pulled 'ard this mornin' ' 'E's a foolZ
-
If 'e don't mend that fence Ar wot's the goodF
I lets 'im go an' sneaks be'ind the shedF
An' sits there broodin' on a pile uv woodF
Ther's certin things she might 'ave left unsaidF
Ther' wasn't nothin' fer to make 'er goR
An' dig up chance remarks uv years agoR
-
Me problem's this Either I 'urts DoreenJ
By doin' things with which she don't agreeF
Or lets Rose slide an' treats me cobber meanJ
Ole Ginger Mick 'oo 'ad no friend but meF
I ain't a ringtail but by gum it's toughA2
I loves me wife too much to treat 'er roughA2
-
If I was single 'Struth 'Oo wants to beF
Fool batchelors can larf their silly larfA2
An' kid theirselves they got a pull on meF
I'm out uv sorts that's all an' more than 'arfA2
Inclined to give some coot a crack right nowR
Fer pref'rince some insultin' single cowR
