But 'Fie ' exclaims the Government | D |
'Have we not experts heaven sent | E |
Who by their schemes an shrewd advice | F |

Then lo with docket and with file | H |
The studious experts toy the while | H |
With rain and sun the season goes | I |
The blossom falls the fruit it grows | I |
As bureaucrats debate and disagree | C |
They look up section forty two | J |

All eagerly upon the scent | E |
Of written rule and precedent | D |
And the apricot is hardening on the tree | C |
- | |
The orchardist toils in the sun | K |
He prunes and delves and one by one | K |
The trees are sprayed with Parls Green | L |
Or mayhap soap or kerosene | L |
Or some vile mixture dear to chemistry | C |
Meantime a sale the experts seek | M |
Not hurriedly all in a week | M |

Gravely they ponder this and that | O |
While buyers wait upon the mat | O |
And as the smiling autumn comes | P |
They chew their pens and suck their thumbs | P |
And argue over Section Ninety D | C |
And while the harried orchardist | C |
Grieves for the market that he missed | C |
They suddenly wake up and say | Q |
'We have agreed at last Hooray ' | - |
But the apricot is rotting 'neath the tree | C |
