The Down-hill Track Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJKF BLBLMFMF NHFHOKPK

The dawnin' of prosperityA
Recalls said old George JonesB
When I was young a song we sungC
In none too sober tonesB
When easy breezy days were hereD
An' cash was wildly spentE
Small good it done to anyoneF
But this is how it wentE
-
'Oh toil with a will to the summit of the hillG
It's the luggin' an' the tuggin' does the trickH
But be careful of the dropp when you've labored to the topI
An' the fool who makes the pace too quickH
For there's more loads spilled an' there's more men killedJ
Where the road runs to the valley down belowK
So restrain that eager itchin' sit well back into the britchin'F
Go slow Sonny lad go slow '-
-
I've lived me life said old George JonesB
An' learned me lesson wellL
The pampered flesh clothes no old bonesB
As history's headstones tellL
The 'Champagne Charlies' of my dayM
The short an' merry runF
High livin's tucked more men awayM
Than hard times ever doneF
-
Oh dig in yer toes where the up'ard track it goesN
It's the strivin' an' the drivin' does the trickH
But take it steady son when yer on the down'ard runF
'Tis the fool who makes the pace too quickH
For the most men trips when the down grade dipsO
An' there's more stones a'lurkin' for your toeK
Save yer wind an' spare yer muscle for the next long uphill tussleP
Go slow Sonny lad go slowK
