The Criminal War Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCB DEDEEE FEFEE EEEEGE HEHEIE JBJBKB

I am shocked beyond wordsA
Said the statesman 'Tis crimeB
That the clamoring herdsA
Should seek war at this timeB
For a criminal war is sheer follyC
Subversive to ideals sublimeB
-
There are wars that are niceD
There are wars that are notE
And 'tis seeking with viceD
That the nations should plotE
World war when my land is unreadyE
I refuse to consider such rotE
-
My philosophy's clearF
My morality tooE
Tho' my rivals may sneerF
At the things that I doE
If at present for me war's illegal It must be illegal for youE
-
We are human I trustE
And to decency wedE
Let's have war if we mustE
But at present I dreadE
What crimes may come out of the carnageG
If blood be illegally shedE
-
In the past all alongH
We have cleaved to our creedE
We shall fight when we're strongH
When we're not we still pleadE
Our revulsion to acts homicidalI
Induced by man's envy and greedE
-
Keep the sword in its sheathJ
Seek sweet peace for a timeB
Till all armed to the teethJ
Our meek voices may climbB
To sue for the blessings of HeavenK
On butchery purged of all crimeB
