The Creed Of Old George Jones Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCAA ADADEEFG AHAHIIAA JKLKCCAA

A little of fretting a little of gettingA
A little of slaving and saving may beB
A little of spending a little of lendingA
And giving up living be easy and freeB
But a man gathers and all a man ownsC
Goes out at the finish said old George JonesC
Like a spark in the dark and the sum of his tryingA
A name and a memory drifting and dyingA
-
A little of blund'ring a little of wond'ringA
A little of scheming and dreaming when youngD
A little of grieving a little believingA
In secret strange things that come slow to the tongueD
For every man is a being apartE
And none may look deep in his fellow man's heartE
Scholars and strangers chance met in life's collegeF
But tolerance grows with the sum of our knowledgeG
-
And I who have tarried o'er long with the livingA
Have come to a creed that gives hope of contentH
In getting and spending is grief but in givingA
Is all that this riddle of life ever meantH
For life is a riddle an tho' I grow oldI
Still fit as a fiddle to one creed I holdI
'Tis getting moves man while to life he is cleavingA
But giving looms large when it comes to his leavingA
-
A little of sorrow of plans for tomorrowJ
A little of helping the weak and the foolK
A little of laughter and all that comes afterL
Is one lesson learned in life's arduous schoolK
For all a man gathers and all a man ownsC
But ends in a heartache said old George JonesC
Like a spark in the dark comes an end to his livingA
And all that live after the sum of his givingA
