Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE AGHGIJKJ LMNMAOPO QRSRRTRT UVWVXYJY JZJZJNZN ZA2B2A2C2D2JD2 ZE2ZE2ZF2JF2Light of my lives Is the time not yet | A |
Lo I've brooded on a star | B |
Through many a year with the hope held dear | C |
That in some future far | B |
I would know the joy of a love returned | D |
Are my lives lived vainly all | E |
Since that cosmic morn when life now born | F |
First moved on this mundane ball | E |
- | |
Yea I mind it yet when first we met | A |
On a tertiary rock | G |
Flow the graceful charm of your rudiments | H |
Imparted love's first shock | G |
But I was a mere organic cell | I |
In that early eocene | J |
While you were a prim primordial germ | K |
And the mother of protogene | J |
- | |
So I loved and died and the ages sped | L |
Till the time of my second birth | M |
When I took my place in the cosmic race | N |
And again came down to earth | M |
Once more we met Ah love not yet | A |
You were far above my state | O |
For how could I raise my mollusc gaze | P |
To a virtuous vertebrate | O |
- | |
Again we died and again we slept | Q |
And again we came to be | R |
I as an anthropoidal ape | S |
And you as a chimpanzee | R |
You as a charming chimpanzee | R |
With a high patrician air | T |
And I watched you waltz from tree to tree | R |
As I slunk in my lowly lair | T |
- | |
And yet again in an age or so | U |
We met and I mind the sob | V |
I sobbed when I found that I was what | W |
And you were a thingumbob | V |
You had sold your tail for a kind of soul | X |
You had grown two thumbs beside | Y |
And I knew again that my love was vain | J |
So I went to the woods and died | Y |
- | |
As a humble homunculus later on | J |
I crept to your cave at night | Z |
And howled long love lorn howls in vain | J |
To my lady troglodyte | Z |
And I grew insane at your cold disdain | J |
And my howlings filled the place | N |
Till your father sought me out one night | Z |
And again I yearned in space | N |
- | |
Then light of my lives Is the time not yet | Z |
say in what distant life | A2 |
In what dim age that is still to come | B2 |
May I win and call you wife | A2 |
Still high above My love my love | C2 |
Nay how can I raise my eyes | D2 |
To you my star of the eocene | J |
My e'er elusive prize | D2 |
- | |
Lo Time speeds on and the suns grow cold | Z |
And the earth infirm and hoar | E2 |
And ages past we are here at last | Z |
Ay both on the earth once more | E2 |
But alas dear heart as far apart | Z |
As e'er in this cosmic whirl | F2 |
For I'm but a lowly writer man | J |
And you are a tea room girl | F2 |
