Light of my lives Is the time not yetA
Lo I've brooded on a starB
Through many a year with the hope held dearC
That in some future farB
I would know the joy of a love returnedD
Are my lives lived vainly allE
Since that cosmic morn when life now bornF
First moved on this mundane ballE
-
Yea I mind it yet when first we metA
On a tertiary rockG
Flow the graceful charm of your rudimentsH
Imparted love's first shockG
But I was a mere organic cellI
In that early eoceneJ
While you were a prim primordial germK
And the mother of protogeneJ
-
So I loved and died and the ages spedL
Till the time of my second birthM
When I took my place in the cosmic raceN
And again came down to earthM
Once more we met Ah love not yetA
You were far above my stateO
For how could I raise my mollusc gazeP
To a virtuous vertebrateO
-
Again we died and again we sleptQ
And again we came to beR
I as an anthropoidal apeS
And you as a chimpanzeeR
You as a charming chimpanzeeR
With a high patrician airT
And I watched you waltz from tree to treeR
As I slunk in my lowly lairT
-
And yet again in an age or soU
We met and I mind the sobV
I sobbed when I found that I was whatW
And you were a thingumbobV
You had sold your tail for a kind of soulX
You had grown two thumbs besideY
And I knew again that my love was vainJ
So I went to the woods and diedY
-
As a humble homunculus later onJ
I crept to your cave at nightZ
And howled long love lorn howls in vainJ
To my lady troglodyteZ
And I grew insane at your cold disdainJ
And my howlings filled the placeN
Till your father sought me out one nightZ
And again I yearned in spaceN
-
Then light of my lives Is the time not yetZ
say in what distant lifeA2
In what dim age that is still to comeB2
May I win and call you wifeA2
Still high above My love my loveC2
Nay how can I raise my eyesD2
To you my star of the eoceneJ
My e'er elusive prizeD2
-
Lo Time speeds on and the suns grow coldZ
And the earth infirm and hoarE2
And ages past we are here at lastZ
Ay both on the earth once moreE2
But alas dear heart as far apartZ
As e'er in this cosmic whirlF2
For I'm but a lowly writer manJ
And you are a tea room girlF2
