The Censor sits behind his deskA
And smiles a censored smileB
His great blue pencil hovers o'erC
Some masterpiece awhileB
Then swoops oh child of whose poor ravished brainD
Coldly another innnocent is slainD
The Censor is a murdererC
None knows his secret lairE
Nor all the dark and awful deedsF
He does in ambush thereE
No eye has seen his charnel house it's floorG
With literary corpses littered o'erC
-
The Censor is a crocodileB
Beneath that slimy floodH
The Waters of OblivionI
He seeks his livelihoodJ
His gloating eye marks children of my penK
He draws them under from the sight of menK
-
The Censor is a nibbling mouseL
The fair cheese of my mindM
He rifles till there's nothing leftN
But atmosphere and rindM
That fair round cheese formed lovingly by meO
From milk of thought and curds of poesyL
-
The Censor is an elephantP
With large ungainly feetQ
He dances on the glad green fieldsL
I sowed in toil and heatQ
Till all the fairest flow'rs of thought are slainD
And only unaesthetic weeds remainD
-
The Censor is the Fiend of StormsL
Upon the Inky SeaL
In fear my poor frail craft I launchR
Then with unholy gleeL
He makes the winds tear howling through the shroudsL
And sends fork'd death and shipwreck from the cloudsL
The Censor is a sorcerorC
Above rare fruits that growC
Upon the tree of geniusL
His hand waves to and froC
Hey Presto And their lusciousness is slainD
Apples of Sodom Dead Sea Fruit remainD
-
The Censor is a hooded snakeS
That lurks within the grassL
And rears to sink his poison fangsL
In heedless babes that passL
Dear Children of my brain wee tender thingsL
That sink and swoon and perish when he stingsL
And still he is a gentlemanI
This much I will admitT
In 'Correspondence Columns' heL
Seeks not to air his witT
On shrinking backs he lays no caustic stripeU
Nor stoops to call our Masterpieces 'tripe'U
