On fights an' all the tale uv blood | B |
Their talk as they remark is dud | B |
- | |
It's so with soldiers I 'ave 'eard | B |
All times The things they 'ave done | F |
War mad with blood before their eyes | G |

The time I tried to go | J |
Flat feet Me feet 'as len'th and brea'th | N |
Enough to kick a 'Un to death | O |

They don't know nothing bein' reared | B |
Out 'ere where war 'as never spread | B |
'A land by bloodless conquest won ' | - |
As some son uv a writin' gun | F |
Sez in a book I read | B |
They don't know nix but wot they're told | B |
At school an' that sticks till they're old | B |
- | |
Yeh've got to take the kid at school | H |
Gettin' 'is 'ist'ry lesson learned | B |
Then tales uv Nelson an' uv Drake | P |
Uv Wellington an' Fightin' Blake | P |
'Is little 'eart 'as burned | B |
To get right out an' 'ave a go | J |
An' sock it into some base foe | J |
- | |
Nothin' but glory fills 'is mind | B |
The British charge is somethin' grand | B |
The soldier that 'e reads about | B |
Don't 'ave no time for fear an' doubt | B |
'E's the 'eroic brand | B |
So when the boy gets in the game | E |
'E jist wades in an' does the same | E |

To Gran'dad and the pioneers | R |
'Oo packed up all their bag uv tricks | S |
An' come out 'ere in fifty six | S |
An' battled thro' the years | R |
Our Gran'dads and their women too | B |
That 'ad the grit to face the new | B |
- | |
It's that old stock an' more than that | B |
It's Bill an' Jim an' ev'ry son | F |
Gettin' three good meat meals a day | B |
An' 'eaps uv chance to go an' play | B |
Out in the bonzer sun | F |
It's partly that but don't forget | B |
When it's all said there's something yet | B |
- | |
There's something yet an' there I'm beat | B |
Crowds uv these lads I've known but then | T |
They 'ave got somethin' from this war | U |
Somethin' they never 'ad before | U |
That makes 'em better men | T |
Better There's no word I can get | B |
To name it right There's somethin' yet | B |

We 'ear a lot about reward | B |
We praise an' sling the cheers about | B |
But there was debts we can't repay | B |
Piled up on us one single day | B |
When that first list come out | B |
There ain't no way to pay that debt | B |
Do wot we can there's somethin' yet | B |
