Once an anthropoidal apeA
Hairy savage strange of shapeA
On a day that was excessively B CB
In a forest damp and dimC
With his tail round a limbC
Hung head downward from a neolithic treeB
And appeared to be lost in gloomy introspectionD
-
In his dull primeval styleE
He considered quite a whileE
A comparatively thoughtful ape was heB
Then he drummed upon his chestF
And remarked 'I give it bestF
Strike me lucky This 'ere game's no good to meB
And I'm full up of the whole damn business '-
To the father of the tribeG
He proceeded to describeG
How upon a change of living he was bentH
Said the Tory anthropoidH
'Son such thoughts you should avoidH
They are obviously born of discontentH
And such revolutionary notions would rend the whole social fabric '-
Since the EoceneI
Till this age of biplanesJ
Man has ever beenK
Yearning toward the high planesJ
And while the Tory lags behind in by ways worn and narrowL
'Tis the discontented section that shoves on the old world's barrowL
-
Once a naked troglodyteH
On a bitter Winter's nightH
Sat and shivered in his cave the whole night throughM
For his scanty coat of hairN
In no manner could compareN
With the matted clothes his late forefather grewM
Meaning the meditative anthropoidal ape I mentioned previouslyB
And the troglodyte remarkedH
As without a wild dog barkedH
And a dinosaurus lumbered through the fogO
'I am sick of nakednessJ
And I'd like I must confessJ
To be shielded in the clothing of a dogP
And hang me if I don't go after one in the morning '-
-
He was met with scoffs and grinsJ
When he walked abroad in skinsJ
And the troglodyte Conservatives cried 'ShameB
Thus to hide the healthy nudeH
Is obscene indecent rude '-
But the malcontent felt warmer all the sameB
And so began the evolution of the split skirt and the hot sockQ
Since the Age of StoneR
To these Days of ReasonD
Man has keener grownR
In and out of seasonD
'Tis through being discontented that humanity progressesJ
If you're satisfied with dog skins you will ne'er have satin dressesJ
Once upon a time a slaveS
Had an impulse to behaveS
In a most unprecedented sort of styleE
He threw down his tools and criedH
That he wasn't satisfiedH
And all slavery was barbarous and vileE
They probably boiled him in oil but that's merely incidentalT
-
Once again a man who rodeH
In a coach disliked the modeH
Of that locomotion 'Twas too slow by farU
He was filled with discontentH
So he or some other wentH
And in course of time evolved the motor carU
And if ever you've had one scare seven devils out of you you'll knowL
it for a very great inventionD
-
So observe this discontentH
To mankind is wisely sentH
That he may be urged along to conquer new thingsJ
They who were quite satisfiedH
Like the Dinosaurs diedH
While the discontented anthropoids still do thingsJ
And continue to be discontented of course but that's all in the gameB
Since the age of apesJ
To this generationD
Mankind thus escapesJ
Absolute stagnationD
Here's the only consolation my philosophy is givingV
Discontentment with existence is your sole excuse for livingV
