| No man could prophesy none could foretell | B |
| How when the day came that the populace needed him | A |
| Quite a new Ned would emerge from his shell | B |
| For he blithered and blathered and talked without end | C |
| In a manner provoking to foe and to friend | C |

| In days of prosperity peevish asperity | D |
| Ever informed his debate in the House | E |
| Some hint or suspicion of fault or omission | F |
| And Ned would arise without thinking and rouse | E |
| But 'tis strange what a change has come over the fellow | G |
| Who faced with stern duty grown thoughtful and mellow | G |

| 'Tis well that the man has arrived with the hour | I |
| Who wielding a sabre as ever for Labor | I |
| Sees prejudice wane as he waxes in pow'r | J |
| And 'mid froth and faction can still keep his head | K |
| While we gasp at the grit of the latter day Ned | K |

| Tho' other men curse it he thrives on adversity | D |
| Lately for doggedness taking the palm | L |
| And arising refreshed to the popular joy | M |
