My Epitaph Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AAABCCCB DDDEFF E GGGHI JH KKKALLLA MMMNHHHN OPPQRRRQ IIJSTTUBOh praise me now if you would please | A |
My soul with soothing flatteries | A |
Praise with my living clay agrees | A |
'Tis sweet I vow | B |
Give me kind words while I can feel | C |
The modest blushes gently steal | C |
What time my virtues you reveal | C |
Oh praise me now | B |
- | |
For when the vital spark has fled | D |
No matter what kind words are said | D |
I'll simply go on being dead | D |
And take no heed | E |
Or if perchance beneath the clay | F |
I hear some kindly critic say | F |
'He was a boshter'in his day ' | - |
'Twere hard indeed | E |
- | |
'Twere bitter hard to be confined | G |
Gagged by grim Death while fellows kind | G |
Call my good qualities to mind | G |
And softly sigh | H |
I vow I'd writhe within my bier | I |
And strive to croak at least 'Hear hear ' | - |
For I have ever prized that dear | J |
Right to reply | H |
- | |
And when at last I meet my doom | K |
And moulder in the chilly tomb | K |
Gaunt Death might play within the gloom | K |
Who knows what pranks | A |
My very skeleton would squirm | L |
To hear on my behalf some worm | L |
Or some unlettered grave yard germ | L |
Returning thanks | A |
- | |
Then if you're keen on praising me | M |
I'd rather be alive to see | M |
And hear and feel the flattery | M |
And know 'tis true | N |
And when I rise to make reply | H |
I fain would droop a modest eye | H |
And by my halting speech imply | H |
It is my due | N |
- | |
I do not want a monument | O |
Why should good money so be spent | P |
Nay put it out at ten per cent | P |
And when you save | Q |
Enough to purchase goodly fare | R |
Then spread me out a banquet rare | R |
No gift's appreciated there | R |
Within the grave | Q |
- | |
Oh praise me now while I am here | I |
In my attentive living ear | I |
Pour adulation never fear | J |
I mind the row | S |
I love you harp upon | T |
Those dulcet strings Play on play on | T |
Do not delay until I'm gone | U |
But praise me now | B |
