Home's best she said and the taleA
Of the hungering soil and the flailA
Of the sun and the shuddering threatB
Of the heat and more heat yetB
Of more than a woman can standC
Almost in that merciless landC
With its lifelong lingering strifeD
For the Mallee mother and wifeD
-
Oh I've seen all the spurious zestE
Of the city and yet home's bestE
The sweep of the plain's vast vergeF
And the calling of Life and the urgeF
To struggle and hope in vainG
Then struggle and hope againH
That and the faith that clingsI
For the solving of human thingsI
-
Home's best she said I have seenJ
The glamor of cities the sheenJ
Of the silken garments rareK
And they spell for me despairK
Despair for the woman who cleavesL
To luxury's yellowing leavesL
Despair for the weakening raceM
Who faltering fall from graceM
-
Life as I know it is sternN
And the seed of my seed must learnN
That nothing has life to giveO
Save a man must labor to liveP
Struggle and ache and toilQ
For the gifts that come of the soilQ
Since every treasure of worthR
Comes of the hard kind earthR
-
Home's best she said and the dustS
And the finger of God out thrustS
Saying 'You toil or dieT
Under this pitiless sky '-
Even as long since saidU
To the Parents of Man long deadU
Even as 'twas decreedV
In Man's first passionate needV
-
Home's best For what do they knowW
Who cleave to glitter and showW
And strive in a strange excessX
Of pleasure for happinessY
What do they know of worthR
Of the secret lure of the earthR
And the peace and the exquisite ache of the battleZ
For my man's sakeA2
