Kilmore Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAABCCCBDDDB EEEBFCFCGGGC HHHIJJJIKKKKEEEK

Kilmore cares not who comes nighA
But with a calm incurious eyeA
She sees the swift cars speeding byA
Then turns again to laborB
She is content to plod alongC
With now a sigh when things go wrongC
And now a smile and now a songC
Or gossip with a neighborB
Her mind dwells often in the pastD
The roaring days that could not lastD
When men might travel not so fastD
And all the world was biggerB
-
She saw the coaches clatter downE
To pause at her important townE
With loud voiced venturers strong and brownE
And many a bearded diggerB
She saw the eager traffic flowF
Upon the road to BendigoC
With talk of many a golden showF
Of finds and fields excitingC
But wisely she contrived to holdG
A treasure greater far than goldG
Where her rich pasture lands unfoldG
A scene far more invitingC
-
She smiles to dream of those old daysH
Of hearty men and hectic waysH
When maddened by the golden crazeH
Men sought their fortunes blindlyI
But she who chose the better partJ
Of patient toil and simple artJ
Lives on content of mind and heartJ
And generous and kindlyI
So wealthy now she sits at easeK
In this kind land of fields and treesK
Ignoring all our flippanciesK
And modern fads and crazesK
And where old buildings tumbling downE
Leave scars about her ancient townE
The hasty mock her homely gownE
The wise man waits and praisesK
