The Glugs abide in a far far landA
That is partly pebbles and stones and sandA
But mainly earth of a chocolate hueB
When it isn't purple or slightly blueB
And the Glugs live there with their aunts and their wivesC
In draughty tenements built like hivesC
And they climb the trees when the weather is wetD
To see how high they can really getD
Pray don't forgetD
This is chiefly done when the weather is wetD
-
And every shadow that flits and hidesE
And every stream that glistens and glidesE
And laughs its way from a highland heightF
All know the Glugs quite well by sightF
And they say 'Our test is the best by farG
For a Glug is a Glug so there you areG
And they climb the trees when it drizzles or hailsH
To get electricity into their nailsH
And the Glug that failsH
Is a luckless Glug if it drizzles or hails '-
-
Now the Glugs abide in the Land of GoshI
And they work all day for the sake of SploshI
For Splosh the First is the Nation's prideJ
And King of the Glugs on his uncle's sideJ
And they sleep at night for the sake of restK
For their doctors say this suits them bestK
And they climb the trees as a general ruleL
For exercise when the weather is coolL
They're taught at schoolL
To climb the trees when the weather is coolL
-
And the whispering grass on the gay green hillsM
And every cricket that skirls and shrillsM
And every moonbeam gleaming whiteF
All know the Glugs quite well by sightF
And they say 'It is safe the text we bringN
For a Glug is an awfully Glug like thngN
And they climb the trees when there's sign of fogN
To scan the land for a feasible dogN
They love to jogN
Through dells in quest of the feasible dog '-
-
Now the Glugs eat meals three times a dayO
Because their fathers ate that wayO
And their grandpas said the scheme was goodP
To help the Glugs digest their foodQ
And it's wholesome food the Glugs have gotR
For it says so plain on the tin and potR
And they climb the trees when the weather is dryS
To get a glimpse of the pale green skyS
We don't know whyS
But they love to gaze on the pale green skyS
-
And every cloud that sails aloftT
And every breeze that blows so softU
And every star that shines at nightF
All know the Glugs quite well by sightF
For they say 'Our text is safe and trueB
What one Glug does the other Glugs doB
And they climb the trees when the weather is hotR
For a birds' eye view of the garden plotR
Of course it's rotR
But they love that view of the garden plot '-
-
At half past two on a Wednesday mornV
A most peculiar Glug was bornV
And later on when he grew a manW
He scoffed and sneered at the Chosen PlanW
'It's wrong ' said this Glug whose name was JoiX
'Bah ' said the Glugs 'He's a crazy boy '-
And they climbed the trees as the West wind stirredY
To hark to the note of the guffer birdY
It seems absurdY
But they're awfully fond of the guffer birdY
-
And every reed that rustles and swaysM
By the gurgling river that plashes and playsM
And the beasts of the dread neurotic nightF
All know the Glugs quite well by sightF
And 'Why ' say they 'it is easily doneZ
For a dexter Glug's like a sinister oneZ
And they climb the trees when the thunder rollsM
To soddenly salve their small pale soulsM
For they fear the coalsM
That threaten to frizzle their pale pink souls '-
-
Said the Glug called Joi 'This climbing treesM
Is a foolish art and things like theseM
Cause much distress in the land of GoshI
Let's stay on the ground and kill King Splosh '-
But Splosh the King he smiled a smileA2
And beckoned once to his hangman GuileA2
Who climbed a tree when the weather was calmB2
And they hanged poor Joi on a snufflebust palmB2
Then sang a psalmC2
Did those pious Glugs 'neath the sufflebust palmB2
-
-
And every bee that kisses a flowerD2
And every blossom born for an hourD2
And ever bird on its gladsome flightF
All know the Glugs quite well by sightF
For they say ''Tis a simple text we've gotR
If you know one Glug why you know the lotR
So they climbed a tree in the burgeoning SpringN
And they hanged poor Joi with some second hand stringN
It's a horrible thingN
To be hanged by Glugs with second hand stringN
-
Then Splosh the king rose up and saidE2
'It's not polite but he safer deadE2
And there's not much room in th eland of GoshI
For a Glug named Joi and a king named Splosh '-
And ever Glug flung high his hatF2
And cried 'We're Glugs And you can't change that '-
So they climbed the trees since the weather was coldG2
As their great grandmothers climbed of oldG2
We are not toldG2
Why Grandma climbed when the weather was coldG2
-
And every cloud that sails the blueB
And every dancing sunbeam tooB
And every spakling dewdropp brightF
All know the Glugs quite well by sightF
'We tell ' say they 'by a simple testK
For any old Glug is like the restK
And they climb the trees when there's weather aboutH2
In a general way as a cure for goutH2
Though some folk doubtH2
If the climbing of trees is good for gout '-
