John Galsworthy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDD EFGFHH IJIJKK LMLMNN

Not for vague honors not for treacherous powerA
He lived and toiled thro' this his earthy spanB
But to uphold and cultivate the dowerC
God given for enlightment of manB
Here was no tale of talents mis appliedD
But of gifts to the last hour multipliedD
-
Grave kindly scrivener moved to no swift wrathE
By tyrannies or Greed's condoning pleasF
Pity was there for Vandal and for GothG
Clutching insensate at earth's vanitiesF
Pity was there with truth and justice whenH
He held his shining mirror up to menH
-
That they might see themselves not as they seemI
To smug content and sleek complacencyJ
Lulled by the opiate of their false dreamI
But as some wise kind visitant might seeJ
And weigh and by wise standards judge the worthK
Of all the sad frailities of earthK
-
So he has lived and so he lays him downL
Leaving a picture with us at the endM
Not of some grim reformer's fretful frownL
But of a pitying understanding friendM
And if thro' him this blundering world should gainN
One mite in wisdom life were not in vainN
