When old ADAM bit the appleA
And thereafter had to grappleA
With hard toil to earn his daily bread by sweatB
There's no doubt that he protestedC
That his 'rights' had been molestedD
And he's probably protesting strongly yetB
'When this garden was createdC
It was never contemplatedD
It was never in the schedule or the planE
'Twasn't even dimly hintedC
That my living would be stintedC
Or that Work would ever be the lot of man 'F
-
But in spite of protestationG
ADAM with his lone relationG
Was evicted in an arbitrary wayH
Even though that resolutionG
Wasn't in the ConstitutionG
And his children have been grafting to this dayH
But poor ADAM'S old contentionG
Has become a stock conventionG
'Mid the ADAMS of the nations ever sinceI
'Mid the shufflers and the shirkersI
Crusted Tory anti workersI
They whom nought but 'precedent' can e'er convinceI
-
They're the ADAMS of the race they're the men that clog the paceI
With their backs upon the vanguard and their eyes upon the rearJ
Praising loud their point of view and regarding owt that's newK
With a rabid Tory hatred and a vague old fashioned fearJ
They're the men of yester year loitering all needless hereL
And meandering around and 'round in aimless endless ringsI
Ever ready to resent acts without a precedentC
Such as were not contemplated in the ancient scheme of thingsI
'O it was not contemplated '-
'Tis the cry of the belatedC
The complaint of all the Old Worlds waterloggedC
Tis the trade mark of the ToryM
'Tis the declaration hoaryM
'Tis the protest of the busted and the boggedC
Mark whenever it is utteredC
By the lips of ancients mutteredC
There is wisdom lacking here at any rateC
For when Tories were createdC
It was never contemplatedC
That they ever would attempt to contemplateC
-
There are many things decidedC
Quite by precedent unguidedC
It was never contemplated by the wayH
When the scheme of things was shapingN
And mankind emerged from apingN
That he'd ever learn to eat three times a dayH
Yet all precedent unheedingN
Even Tories time their feedingN
And are known to be quite regular at mealsI
Though in neolithic agesI
'Twas laid down by ancient sagesI
That a man shall eat when so inclined he feelsI
-
He's the dead weight at the back he's the log upon the trackN
He's the man who shouts the warning when the danger's past and goneO
He's the prophet of the old by defunct traditions holdC
He's the chap who sits and twaddles while the crowd goes marching onP
Of the things uncontemplated in the councils of the deadC
But the nation marches by heedless of his bitter cryQ
Marches on and contemplates the vital things away aheadC
-
In the shaping of a nationG
Can we crowd all contemplationG
Can we plan it in a hurried week or soI
Cease your ancient whiskered storyM
And observe O gentle ToryM
We are contemplating matters as we goI
E'en to day we're contemplatingN
Matters princip'ly relatingN
To the shaping of to morrow's onward wayH
And to morrow ev'ry grafterM
Will be forming plans for afterM
But we are not harking back to yesterdayH
-
For the future days arrangingN
Seeking planning ever changingN
Weeding out the old mistakes of yester yearM
Planting now the seed of new thingsI
March the men who dare and do thingsI
Opening up the unblazed road without a fearM
And O mark you gentle ToryM
We shall judge your measures hoaryM
By the use in this day's scheme they representC
We shall use them if we want themR
If we don't we shall supplant themR
For we do not care a damn for precedentC
-
He's discretion at its worst he a harbinger reversedC
He's the obstinate old party who abhors the new and strangeS
He's the man whose ancient eyes ever fail to recogniseI
That the Law of Man was ever Change and ever will be ChangeS
He's a scoffer at the Law he's a blemish and a flawT
And he whines as did old ADAM when he lost the realms of blissI
When they shored him in the cold in the parlous days of oldC
'THIS WAS NEVER CONTEMPLATED YOU'VE NO PRECEDENT FOR THIS '-
