Rhyme Scheme: ABABCD AEAEFF GHGHII JKJKLL MNMNJJ OJOJJJ JJJJA O OKOO'In good time when I am ready | A |
Wondrous schemes shall I unfold | B |
But we must be cautious steady | A |
Cleaving to the safe and old | B |
Patience prudence must prevail | C |
They who venture often fail ' | D |
- | |
Thus the politician weakly | A |
Of the big things of the State | E |
While the patient public meekly | A |
Wait and ever hopeful wait | E |
While he slyly woos their vote | F |
With shrewd turnings of his coat | F |
- | |
But in time when other people | G |
Populate this troubled world | H |
Lo from housetop and from steeple | G |
Futile curses will be hurled | H |
Curses on the shiftless ones | I |
Feckless robbers of their sons | I |
- | |
When the last good tree has withered | J |
In an arid rainless clime | K |
Then the weary soul who blithered | J |
Of the verdancy of Time | K |
Will grow restless in his grave | L |
While his baulked descendants rave | L |
- | |
They will curse the generation | M |
That has beggared them by stealth | N |
Curse the mad procrastination | M |
That has robbed the land of wealth | N |
Wealth their foolish fathers spent | J |
Reckless and improvident | J |
- | |
'What care we ' declare the spoilers | O |
'We have ample for to day | J |
Other ages other toilers | O |
Let them suffer as they may | J |
Let the nation's hope be killed | J |
That our bellies may be filled | J |
- | |
'If to day our wealth be doubled | J |
If to day our trade be good | J |
Why should we be plagued and troubled | J |
With vague dreams of nationhood | J |
For our selfish purpose we | A |
Gaily rob prosperity ' | - |
- | |
Robbers of coming race | O |
Glibly crying 'In good time ' | - |
If one good ye had to face | O |
Sons and answer for your crime | K |
With that cry still in your throats | O |
How then would ye scheme for votes | O |
