Rhyme Scheme: AABBBCCDD EEFFGGGHHHIIJJKKLLL AAMMNNOOMM PPQQQQRRQQMMSS TTUUUVVWWQQFriends | A |
Have you too noticed that calm which descends | A |
Upon affairs today | B |
Search as we may | B |
The papers have few things indeed to say | B |
Of even world affairs and as to local | C |
Why they are hardly vocal | C |
They even lack news of diverting crimes | D |
These be dull times | D |
- | |
Even the seething world of politics | E |
Where factions mix | E |
And cause most days at least some mild commotion | F |
Seem like a placid ocean | F |
Like some blue tropic sea peaceful and calm | G |
Floored with pink coral fringed by wavy palm | G |
Where all is gentleness and holy calm | G |
Talking of topics even Mister Hughes | H |
Seems in these days steadfastly to refuse | H |
To air his views | H |
Nay he will not | I |
Even refer to Mister Watt | I |
Eh he is far too mild | J |
And friends I fear me that we are beguiled | J |
By this strange calm this seeming peace this bliss | K |
My friends I don't like this | K |
For | L |
In the not too greatly distant yore | L |
I've seen it all before | L |
- | |
And I my friends | A |
Know well what it portends | A |
The silent politicians friends are scheming | M |
While we are dozing dreaming | M |
Seeming to rest from labour they are busy | N |
Thinking until their mighty brains grow dizzy | N |
For why my friends elections darkly loom | O |
Large in the middle distance and gaunt Doom | O |
Looks down upon them poised to spring like winking | M |
Unless they do some stern and solid thinking | M |
- | |
And does the politician think these days of us | P |
Who seem so precious to him when the fuss | P |
And fret of mad campaigning wring his withers | Q |
What time he blathers | Q |
Loud of intelligent electors Yes | Q |
I must confess | Q |
He thinks of us but never quite | R |
As sentient beings yearning for the light | R |
For friends he dotes | Q |
Ever on votes | Q |
And truly as it was in the beginning | M |
No matter which side happens to be winning | M |
'Tis now and ever will be just the same | S |
And we shall still be mere pawns in the game | S |
- | |
Voters For goodness sake | T |
Awake | T |
It's up to you | U |
To do | U |
Some really serious thinking too | U |
I don't care on which side you mean to vote | V |
Peel off the coat | V |
Indeed indeed | W |
You may do wonders if you will take heed | W |
Or else I say it with reluctant lips | Q |
Remain as hitherto just poker chips | Q |
