FriendsA
Have you too noticed that calm which descendsA
Upon affairs todayB
Search as we mayB
The papers have few things indeed to sayB
Of even world affairs and as to localC
Why they are hardly vocalC
They even lack news of diverting crimesD
These be dull timesD
-
Even the seething world of politicsE
Where factions mixE
And cause most days at least some mild commotionF
Seem like a placid oceanF
Like some blue tropic sea peaceful and calmG
Floored with pink coral fringed by wavy palmG
Where all is gentleness and holy calmG
Talking of topics even Mister HughesH
Seems in these days steadfastly to refuseH
To air his viewsH
Nay he will notI
Even refer to Mister WattI
Eh he is far too mildJ
And friends I fear me that we are beguiledJ
By this strange calm this seeming peace this blissK
My friends I don't like thisK
ForL
In the not too greatly distant yoreL
I've seen it all beforeL
-
And I my friendsA
Know well what it portendsA
The silent politicians friends are schemingM
While we are dozing dreamingM
Seeming to rest from labour they are busyN
Thinking until their mighty brains grow dizzyN
For why my friends elections darkly loomO
Large in the middle distance and gaunt DoomO
Looks down upon them poised to spring like winkingM
Unless they do some stern and solid thinkingM
-
And does the politician think these days of usP
Who seem so precious to him when the fussP
And fret of mad campaigning wring his withersQ
What time he blathersQ
Loud of intelligent electors YesQ
I must confessQ
He thinks of us but never quiteR
As sentient beings yearning for the lightR
For friends he dotesQ
Ever on votesQ
And truly as it was in the beginningM
No matter which side happens to be winningM
'Tis now and ever will be just the sameS
And we shall still be mere pawns in the gameS
-
Voters For goodness sakeT
AwakeT
It's up to youU
To doU
Some really serious thinking tooU
I don't care on which side you mean to voteV
Peel off the coatV
Indeed indeedW
You may do wonders if you will take heedW
Or else I say it with reluctant lipsQ
Remain as hitherto just poker chipsQ
