By the Mediterranean shoreA
In the days of the cohorts and legionsB
When oodles of rain used to pourA
O'er the old agricultural regionsB
When a deluge came thundering downC
Tho' the vineyards of Rome did not need itD
Men cocked a shrewd eyeE
At the lowering skyE
And agreed that the gods had decreed itD
And they said to themselves 'There is not the least doubtF
That's Jupiter Pluvius pouring it out 'G
-
But the restless old world forged aheadH
And men waxed in wisdom and reasonI
An in bluff Merrie England 'tis saidH
When a deluge came down out of seasonI
And rotted their 'turmuts ' their 'spuds'B
Mangelwursts and similar richesB
The wise of the landJ
Saw black magic at handJ
So they sizzled a couple of witchesB
And they said to themselves 'There be not the least doubtF
They hags can cast spells for a deluge or drought '-
-
But progress moved onward and soonK
Men derided the cult of witch burningL
And in times of great floods 'twas the moonK
Caused it all said the men of deep learningL
And they proved since she governs the tidesB
She must govern all water and weatherM
So men turned to this new viewN
Since 'twas novel and newN
And they scrapped old beliefs altogetherM
For they said to themselves 'There is not the least doubtF
Lest the moon's on her back she must spill water out '-
-
But we moderns of course high of browO
Are amused by these crude superstitionsB
We are guided by scientist nowO
Astronomers mathematiciansB
'Tis sunspots as now we know wellP
Cause phenomenal floods and such troublesB
But there isn't much harmQ
So still your alarmQ
For it's only old Sol blowing bubblesB
But I say to myself 'Can there be any doubtF
That a brief hundred years sees this theory out '-
