'Young sir ' 'E sez Like that It made me feelA
Romantic like as if me dream was reelA
'Is dress was fancy an' 'is style was graveB
An' me I 'ope I know 'ow to be'aveC
In 'igh toned company for ain't I beenD
Instructed careful by me wife DoreenE
' Sing small ' she sez An' that's iist wot I didF
I sounds me haitches an' I dips me lidF
-
'Young sir ' 'e sez O' course you understandG
'Twus jist a dream But on the other 'andG
E seemed so reel as 'e sat spoutin' thereH
Beside me on ole Dame Macquarie's ChairH
Lookin' across the 'arbor while 'e talkedG
Seemed sumpthink more that jist a ghost 'oo walkedG
Out o' the past 'Phillip by name ' 'e saidG
A queer ole cock wif lace an' wig on 'eadG
-
It 'appened this way I 'ad jist come downI
After long years to look at Sydney townI
An' 'struth Was I knocked endways Fair su'prisedG
I never dreamed That arch that cut the skiesJ
The Bridge I never thort there could 'a' beenD
I never knoo nor guessed I never seenE
Well Sydney's 'ad some knocks since I been goneK
But strike This shows she keeps on keepin' onL
-
I'd strolled about the town for 'arf a dayG
Then dragged me carcass round the 'arbor wayG
To view the Bridge from Dame Macquarrie's ChairH
Then parks me frame an' gits to thinkin' thereH
Thinkin' of older days an' I supposeM
I must 'ave nodded orf into a dozeM
Nex' thing I knoo ole Phillip come an' satG
Beside me friendly like an' starts to chatG
-
'Young sir ' 'e sez 'You too in sheer amazeN
Look upon this and hark to other daysN
An' dream of this fair city's early startG
In which 'e bows I played my 'umble partG
My 'umble part a flagpole an' a tent '-
'Come orf ' sez I 'You was a fine ole gentG
Reel nob I've read about the things you didG
You picked some site ' 'E bows I dips me lidG
-
'Young sir ' 'e sez 'I've dwelt in spirit 'ereH
To watch this city waxin' year by yearH
But yesterday from a mere staff a tentG
Wonder on wonder as the swift years wentG
A thrivin' village then a busy townI
Then as a stride a city of renownI
Oh what a wondrous miracle of growthO
Think you not so ' 'Too right ' I sez 'My oath '-
-
'I've watched young sir ' 'e sez 'An' I 'ave fearedG
Sometimes feared greatly when ill days appearedG
Yet still they fought and wrought I had small needG
To doubt the great heart of this sturdy breedG
Black war has come Yet over half a worldG
Their sons into that bloody fray they hurledG
And still they triumphed Still their lodestar shone '-
'Sure thing ' sez I ' They kep' on keepin' on '-
-
'Young sir ' 'e sez 'The tears well in my eyesJ
When I behold von arch that cleaves the skiesJ
That mighty span triumphant where we viewP
My old friend Darwin's vision now made trueP
'There the proud arch Colossus like bestrideG
Yon glittering stream and bound the chafing tideG
'Twas so he dreamed a few short years agoneI
Spoke truly sir they keep on keeping on '-
-
So Phillip spoke 'is piece fair puffed wif prideG
An' 'im an' me dreamed by the 'arbor sideG
I of the scene before of years to beQ
An' of the marvels that men yet might seeQ
'Im of a lantern gleamin' thro' the fogR
To light a tent an' two men an' a dogS
Then both of us like some queer instinct bidsT
Stands up serloots the Bridge an' dips our lidsT
