'Haw Good fellow I'm not doubtingA
Your intentions are all rightB
And your general appearanceC
Is intelligent and brightB
But the question you're discussingA
Rather flicks me on the rawD
And it really doesn't matterE
So we'll close the subject Haw 'F
-
Since the every first reformerE
Made suggestions in the treesG
All the old earth's agitatorsH
Meet with phrases such as theseG
And it acts as brake and hobbleI
On the progress of mankindJ
This superior aloofnessK
Of the static type of mindJ
-
'Haw ' It rings throughout the agesL
Since dim neolithic yearsM
Striving to discount the creditN
Of philosophers and seersO
And the richest fattest molluseO
Spat it out in savage hateP
When he marked his fellow's yearningA
Towards a structure vertebrateP
-
'My good chap enthusiasm'sO
Right enough just now and thenQ
But your pose is idioticR
In the sight of sober menQ
Calm yourself my worthy fellowS
Stay that wildly wagging jawT
The ah mattah you're debatingA
Isn't on the tapis Haw '-
-
Spoken in a haughty fashionU
With an apathetic glanceO
Then that simple interjectionU
Clothes a mass of ignoranceO
'Haw The fellow is a boundahP
Do not heed his fuss and fretP
And the subject he alludes toP
Isn't mentioned in our set '-
-
Friend if you have privilegesO
Fairly come by more or lessO
And the claims of poorer brothersO
Cause you most acute distressO
When all argument has failed oyuV
'Gainst their Socialistic lawT
Cultivate the distant mannerE
And the haughty Tory 'Haw '-
-
Cultivate the cool aloofnessO
When they seek with howlings rudeP
To assault your proud positionU
Cultivate the platitudeP
And when they bring forth suggestionsO
Of a democratic typeW
Tell then friend it is 'un British '-
And 'the time is not yet ripe '-
-
When with calm unswerving reasonU
And with logic mercilessO
They convince your better natureE
That abuses need redressO
Do not weakly yield to measuresO
That your prejudices hateP
But remark 'It's not at issue '-
And that closes the debateP
-
Still my friend despite your coldnessO
'Spite reactionary 'Haws '-
These reformers somehow get thereX
When they have a worthy causeO
And the fat and foolish molluseO
Who the vertebrates ignoredP
Did not block all evolutionU
So the scientists recordP
-
As the world goes bravely onwardP
Leaving molluses far behindP
Progress ever has to reckonU
With the static type of mindP
And the fighters in the vanguardP
Recognise this simple lawT
'Social evolution mainlyY
Is the overthrow of 'Haw '-
