'I wash me 'ands uv 'im ' I tells 'em straightA
'You women can do wot yeh dash well likeB
I leave this 'arf a man to 'is own fateA
I've done me bit an' now I'm gone on strikeB
Do wot yeh please but don't arsk 'elp from meC
'E's give me nerves so now I'll let 'im be 'D
-
Doreen an' ole Mar Flood 'as got a schemeE
They've been conspirin' for a week or moreF
About this Digger Smith an' now they dreamE
They've got 'is fucher waitin' in cold storeF
To 'and 'im out an' fix 'im up for lifeG
But they've got Buckley's as I tells me wifeG
-
I've seen them whisperin' up in our roomH
Now they wants me to join in the debateA
But 'Nix ' I tells 'em 'I ain't in the boomH
An' Digger Smith ain't risin' to me baitA
'E's fur too fly a fish for me to catchI
An' two designin' women ain't 'is match '-
-
I puts me foot down firm an' tells 'em NoJ
Their silly plan's a thing I wouldn't touchK
An' then me wife for 'arf an hour or soJ
Talks to me confident of nothin' muchK
Then 'fore I know it I am all red 'otA
Into the scheme an' leader uv the plotA
-
'Twas Mar Flood starts it She got 'old uv 'imH
You know the way they 'ave with poor weak menL
She drops a tear or two concernin' JimH
Tells 'im wot women 'ave to bear an' thenL
She got 'im talkin' like a woman canM
'E never would 'ave squeaked to any manM
-
She leads 'im on It's crook the way they schemeH
To talk about this girl 'e's let be'indA
Not that she's pryin' Why she wouldn't dreamH
But speakin' uv it might jist ease 'is mindA
Then 'fore 'e knows 'e's told to 'is surpriseN
Name an' address an' colour uv 'er eyesN
-
An' then she's off 'ere plottin' with DoreenO
Bustin' a confidence I tells 'em flatA
But all me roustin' leaves 'em both sereneO
Women don't see a little thing like thatA
An' I ain't cooled off yet before they've gotA
Me workin' for 'em in this crooked plotA
-
Nex' day Mar Flood she takes 'er Sunday dressP
An' 'er best bonnet up to townQ
'Er game's to see the girl at this addressP
An' word 'er in regard to comin' downQ
To take Smith be su'prise My part's to fixR
A meetin' so there won't be any mixR
-
I tips that girl won't 'esitateA
She don't She comes right back with Mar nex' dayA
All uv a fluster When I see 'er stateA
I thinks I'd best see Digger straight awayA
'Cos if I don't 'e's bound to 'ear the rowJ
With 'er 'Where is 'e Can't I see 'im now '-
-
I finds 'im in the paddick down at Flood'sR
I 'ums an' 'ars a bit about the cropsR
'E don't say nothin' goes on baggin' spudsR
''Ow would yeh like ' I sez to 'im an' stopsR
''Ow would it be' 'E stands an' looks at meH
'Now wot the 'Ell's got into you ' sez 'eS
-
That don't restore me confidence a bitA
The drarmer isn't goin' as I tippedA
I corfs an' makes another shot at itA
While 'e looks at me like 'e thinks I'm dippedA
'Well jist suppose ' I sez an' then I turnT
An' see 'er standin' there among the fernT
-
She don't want no prelimin'ries this tartA
She's broke away before they rung the bellU
She's beat the gun an' got a flyin' startA
Smith makes a funny noise an' I sez ''Ell '-
Because I tumbles that I'm out uv placeR
But as I went I caught sight uv 'er faceR
-
That's all I want to know An' as I ranM
I 'ear's her cry 'My man Man an' a 'arfG
Don't fool me with yer talk uv 'arf a man '-
An' then I 'ear ole Digger start to larfG
It was a funny larf so 'elp me bobV
Fair in the middle uv it come a sobV
-
I don't see Digger till the other nightA
'Well 'Arf a man ' I sez ''Ow goes it now '-
'Yes 'arf a man ' sez 'e 'Yeh got it rightA
I can't change that alone not any'owJ
But she is mendin' things ' 'E starts to larfG
'Some day ' 'e sez 'she'll be the better 'arf '-
