Hakim Kahn Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCE FGFGHDHE IJIJKDKE LJLJMDME CNCNEDOE AKAKIDIEWhen first I found this forest place | A |
More years ago than I can tell | B |
I met a man of alien race | A |
And came to know and like him well | B |
A humble hawker spare and tall | C |
Dark faced a handsome bearded man | D |
And often now bush folk recall | C |
The kindly smile of Hakim Khan | E |
- | |
He plied his trade in ways remote | F |
Where bush wives pawed his varied stock | G |
A working shirt a winter coat | F |
Socks handkerchiefs a cheap print frock | G |
They chaffered with him till at eve | H |
With well fed horse and well kept van | D |
Sim Jackson's block by Jackson's leave | H |
Served as camp for Hakim Khan | E |
- | |
And many a talk and many a tale | I |
We had together long ago | J |
He told me of the pleasant vale | I |
Of Kashmir where the roses grow | J |
And while he spoke his fine dark eyes | K |
Saw nought of bush or hawker's van | D |
But other scenes and other skies | K |
That held the dreams of Hakim Khan | E |
- | |
And while the meat that his own hand | L |
Had slain cooked o'er the camp fire's glow | J |
He spoke of this new kindly land | L |
And kind good men he'd come to know | J |
His white teeth flashing in a grin | M |
He spoke of Jackson that nice man | D |
Grass for my horse Small gifts could win | M |
Deep gratitude for Hakim Khan | E |
- | |
For when Sim Jackson lost his all | C |
One summer while the bush fires roared | N |
There came a figure spare and tall | C |
And tossed a purse upon the board | N |
A well filled purse That help you on | E |
Mister you pay back when you can | D |
You been good friend And he was gone | O |
Such was the heart of Hakim Khan | E |
- | |
He long since left our forest place | A |
This hawker with the soft dark eyes | K |
This simple man of alien race | A |
Who looked on life so simply wise | K |
Back in his well loved Kashmir vale | I |
Where roses grow he ends his span | D |
And many a bush friend hopes the tale | I |
Of dreams come true for Hakim Khan | E |
