Goophic Phantasm Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCCCDD CCCC EB CC CCBBCCFFA CCGGCCAAHH IICCAAEEAATho' I own I have no adequate proofs | A |
Of this queer tale of the quaint old Goophs | A |
The Goophs who dwelt in the land of Guph | B |
Still I think it's a credible tale enough | B |
When applied to Goophs tho' it's realised | C |
That it couldn't occur to the civilised | C |
Sane men like us for it's quite absurd | C |
And the silliest tale that ever you heard | C |
To us 'tis a fantasy vain But then | D |
Of course we're superior normal men | D |
- | |
Now a peaceful Gooph when a stroll one day | C |
Looked over a fence in a casual way | C |
And realised he was staring hard | C |
At a pile of stones in a neighbor's yard | C |
'Now what ' thought he 'are the stones there for ' | - |
Then he suddenly shouted 'My this means war | E |
That pile in there is the very stuff | B |
We use for war in the land of Guph ' | - |
And from that day forth his strength was spent | C |
In gathering stones for armament | C |
- | |
Now the Goophs who heard him were sore afright | C |
And the news spread forth in a single night | C |
Wild rumors grew till the land was rife | B |
With tales of terror and coming strife | B |
And every Gooph hied forth in haste | C |
To gather him stones from wood and waste | C |
From the hills afar and fields near by | F |
Till the price of stones went up sky high | F |
And they said 'War's madness It can't make sense | A |
But a Gooph must look to his self defence ' | - |
- | |
Commerce languished production waned | C |
Goophish relations grew co d and strained | C |
And there wasn't a stone in Guph at all | G |
To build a house or a church or a wall | G |
Each sat on his pile in his own backyard | C |
And talked and shouted and argued hard | C |
Of nations and factions in 'isms' and schools | A |
There is never a doubt of it Goophs were fools | A |
Then someone foolishly heaved a rock | H |
And their world blew up with a horrible shock | H |
- | |
Then their costly stones they flung to the air | I |
With great abandon and little care | I |
These stones they valued they cast them about | C |
Till a number of Goophs were knocked right out | C |
And the land of Guph grew loud with groans | A |
And the end of it all was a litter of stones | A |
And nobody knew what they started it for | E |
And nobody profited Still 'twas war | E |
Mere Guphic insanity Goophish fuss | A |
And of course it couldn't occur to us | A |
