Tho' I own I have no adequate proofsA
Of this queer tale of the quaint old GoophsA
The Goophs who dwelt in the land of GuphB
Still I think it's a credible tale enoughB
When applied to Goophs tho' it's realisedC
That it couldn't occur to the civilisedC
Sane men like us for it's quite absurdC
And the silliest tale that ever you heardC
To us 'tis a fantasy vain But thenD
Of course we're superior normal menD
-
Now a peaceful Gooph when a stroll one dayC
Looked over a fence in a casual wayC
And realised he was staring hardC
At a pile of stones in a neighbor's yardC
'Now what ' thought he 'are the stones there for '-
Then he suddenly shouted 'My this means warE
That pile in there is the very stuffB
We use for war in the land of Guph '-
And from that day forth his strength was spentC
In gathering stones for armamentC
-
Now the Goophs who heard him were sore afrightC
And the news spread forth in a single nightC
Wild rumors grew till the land was rifeB
With tales of terror and coming strifeB
And every Gooph hied forth in hasteC
To gather him stones from wood and wasteC
From the hills afar and fields near byF
Till the price of stones went up sky highF
And they said 'War's madness It can't make senseA
But a Gooph must look to his self defence '-
-
Commerce languished production wanedC
Goophish relations grew co d and strainedC
And there wasn't a stone in Guph at allG
To build a house or a church or a wallG
Each sat on his pile in his own backyardC
And talked and shouted and argued hardC
Of nations and factions in 'isms' and schoolsA
There is never a doubt of it Goophs were foolsA
Then someone foolishly heaved a rockH
And their world blew up with a horrible shockH
-
Then their costly stones they flung to the airI
With great abandon and little careI
These stones they valued they cast them aboutC
Till a number of Goophs were knocked right outC
And the land of Guph grew loud with groansA
And the end of it all was a litter of stonesA
And nobody knew what they started it forE
And nobody profited Still 'twas warE
Mere Guphic insanity Goophish fussA
And of course it couldn't occur to usA
