Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCCE FGHHGIGIIG DGDG JKL FGMMGNLNNLIt's up an' down as me father said | A |
An' his as went before him | B |
Good days could never turn his head | A |
Nor the worst of seasons floor him | B |
Said old george Jones I've heard him say | C |
Full many a time an' often | D |
'The man who knows no evil day | C |
Ain't toughened so he can out stay | C |
Good times in which men soften ' | E |
- | |
See saw 'Tis the older law | F |
That's ruled the world since Adam | G |
If men ain't sipped the bitter cup | H |
How can the good days cheer 'em up | H |
They never know they had 'em | G |
So by an' large I'm sorter glad | I |
I've had a chance to share 'em | G |
These long lean years we've lately had | I |
Now good years come we've got the bad | I |
With which we can compare 'em | G |
- | |
I've heard men say the land is done | D |
Because the hard times fool 'em | G |
Poor simple loons they ain't begun | D |
To know the laws wot rule 'em | G |
'Men ain't learned yet to live on air ' | - |
I've hard my ole dad chuckle | J |
'Stick to the land All wealth lies where | K |
Earth bids all men to seek it e'er | L |
When life gets near the knuckle ' | - |
- | |
See saw 'Tis the olden law | F |
An' laws help them as learned 'em | G |
An' us ole stagers wot held fast | M |
To earth now clear days down at last | M |
Why praise the Lord we've earned 'em | G |
Hard earned said old George Jones most ways | N |
High prized New loads is lighter | L |
Us who held fast can well spare praise | N |
Aye even for then strengthenin' days | N |
That makes these good days brighter | L |
