Geelong Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCB DEDEFFE GHGHIIH JKJKLLK MNMNOON

The earliest lady in the landA
Her pride of caste is highB
Where blue Corio's gleaming strandA
Dream 'neath a peaceful skyB
She sat her down by her five townsC
And garbed in best of homespun gownsC
She watched life pass her byB
-
A leisured lady then and staidD
She mused beside her BayE
While Barwon in the You Yangs shadeD
Droned thro' the drowsy dayE
But now comes unaccustomed stirF
Since Henry to enliven herF
Sent Lizzie here to stayE
-
A spiteful story men once spreadG
Who sought to work her wrongH
About a woman who they saidG
Bore three sons hale and strongH
And of the three they used to tellI
Two still survived alive and wellI
The third was in GeelongH
-
Now she lives down that libelled pastJ
Life quickens in her streetsK
Her mien grows brisk her trade is vastJ
With eager hands she meetsK
New ways and bustles with a willL
But fat and comfortable stillL
Smiles upon all she greetsK
-
Alert yet sensible and saneM
As trade comes rushing inN
She shrewdly turns it to her gainM
With sturdy will to winN
And still withal contrives to wearO
A kindly and complacent airO
And woollens next the skinN
