Dandenong Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKLKL MNMNOPOP

Hard by the gate way of the EastA
She dips within her market squareB
With provender for man and beastA
And goods and chattels round her thereB
A cheery buxom market dameC
A well filled basket on her armD
She calls her wares and makes due claimC
Alike on factory and farmD
-
The neutral ground of her domainE
Is loud with talk of crops and herdsF
Where hucksters bargain for their gainE
With judgment keen and weighted wordsF
Where sunburnt farmers slow of speechG
Match wits with dapper city menH
While she impartially from eachG
Takes toll and bids them come againH
-
With talk of rise and fall in stockI
With keen eyes for a horse's pointsJ
The shrewd eyed dealers hither flockI
To peer in mouths and handle jointsJ
And shake their heads and turn awayK
Then back again to name the priceL
And jokes are mixed on market dayK
With loud mouthed praise and sage adviceL
-
Hard by the Western gate she sitsM
Between the farmland and the townN
To gather all the scraps and bitsM
Of gossip that fly up and downN
And these she turns to her own goodO
A comfortable dame and keenP
Who earns an honest livelihoodO
As town and country go betweenP
