Cup Couplets Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGGGHHIJ KKLLMMCC

Out of great wisdom long stored upA
I would write me a rune of the Melbourne CupA
Out of experience grave and gayB
I would raise me a rhyme to the gala dayB
With words of wisdom then let us beginC
For a many shall wager but few shall winC
And first a warning Go slow this tripD
For there's many a slip 'twixt the Cup and the tipD
And the sport of Kings tho' it capture the townE
Is never for one with but half a crownE
For this oft is the tale of a Cup Day revelF
Dine with the gods and sup with the devilF
And this oft is the rule when the lucky man supsG
He is in on the Cup and he's on in his cupsG
When the living is slow and the horse alsoG
It doesn't much matter what pace you goG
When the living is slow and the horse is fastH
You may keep to a pace that is like to lastH
When the living is fast and the horse is 'dead 'I
There's the dickens to pay and an aching headJ
But fast or slow if you play the gameK
To the end then the end is much the sameK
So this is the motto to hold and to hugL
There is but one Cup but there's many a mugL
And these be the sayings of Smug the saintM
You may guess he's a grouch but I wot he ain'tM
So out or in if you still can grinC
Here's a glorious day to you lose or winC
