Country Towns - Portland Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IAIAJKJK LMLMCNCN

Here she hides an aged dameA
Here she dreams beside the wavesB
Ever baulked of modern fameA
And the deep sea trade she cravesB
Tall ships riding at her portC
Waking her to life anewD
Here she hides and holds the fortC
Hoping yet dreams will come trueD
-
Charming lady dignifiedE
Proud hospitable and kindF
With full half her rights deniedE
Here she waits and calls to mindF
Pictures of the olden daysG
When the whalers sailing downH
To her quiet waterwaysG
Gave first promise to her townH
-
First came Dutton half forgotI
To establish well her claimA
As the land's historic spotI
After him stout Henry cameA
Followed Major Mitchell thenJ
Pushing forward with the taskK
Still she waits denied by menJ
All she has a right to askK
-
But Dame Portland is not doneL
For her pioneering bloodM
Yet shall have ambition wonL
And her fortunes at the floodM
Tall ships riding at her portC
Thriving life about her strandN
She the storehouse and the fortC
Of her fertile hinterlandN
