Country Roads ~ The New Chum Road Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCCD EFEEGHIHHI JKJKLDMLD ENEENOPOO

A new chum went to ease his careA
A many years agoB
To loiter round Toolangi whereA
The stately blue gums growB
No bushcraft had he for his questC
No friend to be his guideD
But sought the grade that served him bestC
From Yarra's plain to mountain crestC
And crossed the Great DivideD
-
And round and round the hills he woundE
No lilting tramp song sang heF
First East then North then West ward boundE
An easy grade at last he foundE
That led him to ToolangiG
And tho' they vowed his trail a freakH
The men that followed afterI
No straighter easier path might seekH
Yet named the brook the New Chum CreekH
With rough good humored laughterI
-
They followed on his trail for yearsJ
With many a stout bush loadK
Till came at last wise engineersJ
To build a goodly roadK
With plan and scale and instrumentL
They sought the mountain sideD
To find the way the new chum wentM
The best as clearly evidentL
To cross the Great DivideD
-
So round and round that hilly aroundE
The pleasant track goes weavingN
Who seek its hillsides blossom boundE
By many a gum and fern tree crownedE
Will find small cause for grievingN
The New Chum Road 'tis called todayO
And they who travel round itP
And drive along that verdant wayO
Will find it in their hearts to sayO
'Good luck to him that found it '-
