Country Roads ~ The New Chum Road Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCCD EFEEGHIHHI JKJKLDMLD ENEENOPOOA new chum went to ease his care | A |
A many years ago | B |
To loiter round Toolangi where | A |
The stately blue gums grow | B |
No bushcraft had he for his quest | C |
No friend to be his guide | D |
But sought the grade that served him best | C |
From Yarra's plain to mountain crest | C |
And crossed the Great Divide | D |
- | |
And round and round the hills he wound | E |
No lilting tramp song sang he | F |
First East then North then West ward bound | E |
An easy grade at last he found | E |
That led him to Toolangi | G |
And tho' they vowed his trail a freak | H |
The men that followed after | I |
No straighter easier path might seek | H |
Yet named the brook the New Chum Creek | H |
With rough good humored laughter | I |
- | |
They followed on his trail for years | J |
With many a stout bush load | K |
Till came at last wise engineers | J |
To build a goodly road | K |
With plan and scale and instrument | L |
They sought the mountain side | D |
To find the way the new chum went | M |
The best as clearly evident | L |
To cross the Great Divide | D |
- | |
So round and round that hilly around | E |
The pleasant track goes weaving | N |
Who seek its hillsides blossom bound | E |
By many a gum and fern tree crowned | E |
Will find small cause for grieving | N |
The New Chum Road 'tis called today | O |
And they who travel round it | P |
And drive along that verdant way | O |
Will find it in their hearts to say | O |
'Good luck to him that found it ' | - |
