Country Pubs Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EEFFGGH FFFFAAAA EEIIAAJWe know those little country pubs | A |
By cross road and by creek | B |
Where faithfully the landlord scrubs | A |
His counter once a week | B |
And stands before his shining bar | C |
To cater for man's thirst | D |
With all the best but where the meals are | C |
He caters with the worst | D |
- | |
'Wottle you 'ave ' There's beer or brandy | E |
Rum or half and half or shandy | E |
Wine or whisky Bottles wink | F |
'Wottle you 'ave boys Name your drink' | F |
But in the grimy dining room | G |
A slattern lass of grease and gloom | G |
Intones in accents charged with grief | H |
'Wottle you 'ave There's corn beef ' | - |
- | |
In the bar the talk grows gay | F |
The landlord beams for trade agog | F |
And yokels wile dull hours away | F |
Idly yarning o'er their grog | F |
But in that cave of gastric woes | A |
Grimly the hungry traveller eats | A |
To end by turning up his nose | A |
And hoping to fill up on sweets | A |
- | |
'Wottle you 'ave ' The cups are cloudy | E |
Linen soiled The waitress dowdy | E |
Comes like an avenging fate | I |
Snatching at the greasy plate | I |
Soggy cabbage soapy 'spuds' | A |
Droning flies and smell of suds | A |
Now she whines like some lost soul | J |
'Wottle you 'ave There's jam roll ' | - |
