Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFGGHHII JJKKLLMM AANNOOPPUnderneath a tree I lie | A |
Watching with lack lustre eye | A |
All those little trivial things | B |
Weakness after sickness brings | B |
Watching birds flit to and fro | C |
Watching how the grasses grow | C |
Watching how the leaves and trees | D |
Blend in Autumn harmonies | D |
And wise insects taught by God | E |
Build their shelters in the sod | E |
- | |
Oh how low the pride of men | F |
Falls and grovels meekly when | F |
Convalescence comes at last | G |
After long borne sufferings past | G |
E'en the arrogance of pain | H |
That strange vanity is vain | H |
And he lies a stricken thing | I |
Bereft of even suffering | I |
- | |
All is gone the pain the pride | J |
Arrogance is laid aside | J |
And he owes all things he'd do | K |
To some worthier being who | K |
Out of charity shall seek | L |
To assist the helpless weak | L |
Out of charity to lend | M |
Splendid strength he is to spend | M |
- | |
So beneath the tree I lie | A |
Reading with a languid eye | A |
Views of that and views of this | N |
In a world so long amiss | N |
And by some strange alchemy | O |
Suddenly it seems to me | O |
That as Earth's wild turmoils cease | P |
Comes convalescence now and peace | P |
