Confidential Canberra Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHIH JEJEKLKL MNMNOPOP

Nay Mr Speaker let the ideal stayA
The picture that voters have in mindB
Of Solons in debate far leagues awayA
Deep in the problems of poor humankindB
Here where the Cotter wends by verdant banksC
Let them imagine eloquence sublimeD
And for those blessings offer grateful thanksC
And vote for us again when comes the timeD
-
Never the real Ah let no listening 'mike'E
Whose ear ubiquitous within the houseF
Gathers too truly what debates are likeE
When Ministers grow hot and members rouseF
When shouts across the floor fly back and forthG
And loose tongues wag with little thought for careH
When words released in unconsidered wrathI
Are flung regardless to the ambient airH
-
Think Mr Speaker All that Canberra meansJ
All that it typifies is here at stakeE
Must Cairns be privy to unlovely scenesJ
The Leeuwin learn of all the bulls we makeE
Must the unguarded phrase the tart retortK
From Darwin down to Derwent and beyondL
Borne on the trembling ether be a sportK
Where'er loud speakers mockingly respondL
-
Why have we set these legislative hallsM
Midst sylvan scenes within the distant bushN
If broadcast all the clamor but recallsM
Forgotten pictures of a noisy pushN
That once in other cities held debateO
Too publicly to let our words run freeP
Condemn us not again to that sad fateO
Preserve our prestige Spare our dignityP
