Listening said the old grey DiggerA
With my finger on the triggerA
I was listening in the trenches on a dark night long agoB
And a lull came in the fightingC
Save a sudden gun flash lightingC
Some black verge And I fell thinking of lost mates I used to knowB
-
Listening waiting stern watch keepingC
I heard little whispers creepingC
In from where 'mid fair fields tortured No man's land loomed out beforeD
And well I knew good mates were lyingC
There grim faced and death defyingC
In that filth and noisome litter and the horror that was warD
-
List'ning so a mood came o'er meE
And 'twas like a vision bore meE
To a deeper lonelier darkness where the souls of dead men roamF
Where they wander strife unheadingC
And I heard a wistful pleadingC
Down the lanes where lost men journey 'Come ye home Ah come ye home '-
-
'Ye who fail yet triumph failing'C
Ye who fall yet falling soarD
Into realms where brother hailingC
Brother bids farewell to warD
Ye for whom this red hell endedG
With the last great shuddering breathH
In the mute uncomprehendedG
Dreamful dignity of deathH
Back to your own land's sweet breastG
Come ye home lads home to rest '-
-
Listening in my old bush shantyG
Said grey Digger living's scantyG
These dark days for won out soldiers and I'd not the luck of someI
But from out the ether comingC
I could hear a vast crowd's hummingC
Hear the singing then the Silence And I knew the Hour had comeI
-
Listening silent as I waitedG
And the picture recreatedG
I could see the kneeling thousands by the Shrine's approaches thereJ
Then above those heads low bendingC
Like an orison ascendingC
Saw a multitude's great yearning rise into the quivering airJ
-
Listening so again the seemingC
Of a vision came and dreamingC
There I saw from out high Heaven spread above the great Shrine's domeF
From the wide skies overarchingC
I beheld battalions marchingC
Mates of mine My comrades singing Coming home Coming homeF
-
'We who bore the cost of gloryG
We who paid the price of peaceK
Now that from this earth war's storyG
Shall please God for ever ceaseK
To this Shrine that you have liftedG
For a symbol and a signL
Of men's hearts come we who driftedG
Thro' long years oh mates of mineL
To earth my brothers' grieving blestG
Now come we home lads home to rest '-
