Oh my brothers do not wrangleA
When the sweets of office dangleA
At a most inviting angleA
Be politeB
In the legislative struggleA
When in office safe you snuggleA
Then to jangle or to juggleA
Isn't rightB
-
-
And O never never niggleA
Though the vulgar people giggleA
When they see a statesman wriggleA
To a placeC
And I prithee never niggleA
With the man who stops to peddleA
For the act upon his head'llA
Bring disgraceC
-
-
And we ought to take a broad strong viewD
What's the matter if the prospect isn't newD
There is virtue in the viewingE
When it comes to merely doingE
Well it's really not important what you doD
It's the viewD
Grand viewD
Never let the doing part embarrass youD
-
When in politics you dabbleA
Then of course you'll have to babbleA
To the vote possessing rabbleA
'Tis the gameF
When you engineer a shuffleA
The ensuing party scuffleA
Somebody is sure to rufflA
All the sameF
-
Then be wary do not tembleA
Smile politely and dissembleA
Though your actions do resembleA
SomersaultsG
When your legislative symbolA
Is the tricky pea and thimbleA
Your manipulations nimbleA
Are not faultsG
-
-
But I charge you take a strong broad viewD
It is most entrancing when you have the screwD
There's no need to be exactingE
In the manner of your actingE
'Tis the statesman's motto when dissensions brewD
Watch the viewD
Wide viewD
And your story of the sight will see you throughD
-
When a banquet you've to tackleA
Where the ancient chestnuts crackleA
And you have to rise and cackleA
To your kindH
Mayhap some hiccoughing freak'llA
Rise and venturing to speak 'llA
Mention you as 'Misher DeakleA
Never mindH
-
-
Let your honeyed phrases trickleA
And defend the Fusion pickleA
Show them that you are not fickleA
In the leastI
Say that why we do not muzzleA
Labor members is a puzzleA
And they'll cheer you as they guzzleA
At the feastI
-
-
And bid them take a broad strong viewD
Bid them see around both corners same as youD
You're the saviour of the nationJ
At a mayoral celebrationJ
If you do not harp too much upon the 'do '-
Praise the viewD
Grand viewD
And they vow you are a stateman strong and trueD
-
With this popular preambleA
You may then adroitly ambleA
To the shocking party scrambleA
Voice your fearsK
Tell them Labor's sure to stumbleA
If it does not cease to grumbleA
And each alderman will mumbleA
Glad 'Hear hears '-
-
-
While the nuts they calmly nibbleA
Let vague phrases gently dribbleA
Give them any quip or quibbleA
You're immenseL
But ah prithee do not trifleA
With a hint of acts and stifleA
Any mention of a rifleA
Or defenceL
-
-
For there's safety in the strong brod viewD
The suppression of the hard strong 'do'I
Is a matter most essentialA
When the Tory consequentialA
Is the man you reckon on to see you thro'D
Boost the viewD
Great viewD
And they'll all begin to think they see it tooD
-
Budding statesmen there is muckleA
In the View when you've to truckleA
To the crowd that will not buckleA
Into graftI
When your policy's a muddleA
And you're sailing in a puddleA
With a Fusion crowd that huddleA
On a raftI
Talk in vague unmeaning jingleA
For the crowd with which you mingleA
Holds within it scarce a singleA
One who'll workM
Here where HANSARD's pages rustleA
Three a show of rush and bustleA
But there's ne'er a chance to hustleA
You must shirkM
Keep your eye upon the broad strong viewD
Call the crowd's attention to it till you're blueD
Keep them watching intentlyA
And you can con ven i entlyA
Hate the fact that you hvae nothing much to doD
Praise the viewD
Fine viewD
And they may forget to keep an eye on youD
