A city clerk was Henry BrownA
Whose suburb knew nor tram nor trainB
And ev'ry morn he walked to townA
-
From nine till five with busy brainB
He labored in an office dimC
Each eve he walked out home againD
-
And all this tramping seemed to himC
A waste of time for 'mid the strifeE
He could not keep his lawn in trimC
-
It clouded his domestic lifeE
This going early coming lateF
And much distressed his little wifeE
-
Then some wise man declared the StateF
Should put in trams and for this schemeG
Brown was a red hot advocateH
-
At last he realised his dreamG
And daily in and out of townA
He trammed it with content supremeG
-
For though it cost him half a crownA
A week in fares the time he savedI
Meant much to him and Mrs BrownA
-
And so they lived and pinched and slavedI
And their suburban happinessJ
Seemed all that they had ever cravedI
-
The little wife began to blessK
The trams nor grieved their meagre doleL
Was weekly two and sixpence lessK
-
Then Brown's employer kindly soulL
Learned of this tram car luxuryM
And promptly rose to take his tollL
-
He sent for Brown and said that heM
Should now contrive to come at eightI
Since trams blessed his vicinityM
-
He also deemed it wise to stateI
That idleness begat much illN
And it was wrong to sleep in lateI
-
Yet Brown contrived to tram it stillN
And trim his lawn with tender careO
And pay his rent and baker's billN
-
His little wife vowed it unfairO
But bowed to stern relentless fateI
And smiled and sewed and worked her shareO
-
Just here the landlord wrote to stateI
Since trams improved his propertyM
He'd raise the rent as from that dateI
-
'Three shillings weekly will not beM
Too much an equitable riseP
Considering the trams ' wrote heM
-
What profit oaths or women's sighsP
His 'sacred rights ' of wealth the fountI
A landlord has to recogniseP
-
To what do poor clerks' lives amountI
An extra hour of slaveryM
Swells an employer's bank accountI
-
The wealthy boss thanks God that heM
Has saved some money out of BrownA
The landlord smiles contentedlyM
-
The trams run gaily up and downA
A sight Brown sadly notes as heM
Plods daily in and out of townA
