Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCE FGFGHIHI I IJDKDK LMNMODOI knew a policeman once | A |
And this is true as it ever could be | B |
Who made me feel an awful dunce | A |
'Cos I lost my dad and it frightened me | B |
He came and took me by the hand | C |
'Well now ' said he 'young fella me lad | D |
No need to cry I understand | C |
You'll soon be back with mummy and dad ' | E |
- | |
I knew the big policeman well | F |
Before he'd talked the teeniest while | G |
Such a lot of things he had to tell | F |
And he had the cheeriest merriest smile | G |
I've got a nipper at home like you | H |
So high young fella me lad ' he said | I |
And all at once as true as true | H |
I forgot to cry and I laughed instead | I |
- | |
And then the big policeman said | I |
'Ho that's the stuff for the troops old son ' | - |
The funniest things came into his head | I |
And I laughed and laughed at every one | J |
And when they found my mummy and dad | D |
And he patted my head and said good bye | K |
Somehow or other I felt quite sad | D |
But I knew he'd be sorry to see me cry | K |
- | |
I know that all policemen now | L |
Are just like that and it's silly to think | M |
They frown and bully and make a row | N |
Why you ought to have seen my merry one wink | M |
And when I pass where he has his beat | O |
When I'm out for a walk with mummy and dad | D |
I wave to my big friend in the street | O |
'What Ho ' says he 'young fella me lad ' | - |
