Bendigo Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAABCCB DEDDEFFE EGEEGHHG IJIFJKKJ LMNLMMMM

A golden maid whose golden voiceA
Calls to the northern landsB
Of riches she has had her choiceA
Twin treasures to make men rejoiceA
Came easy to her handsB
The golden harvest of broad fieldsC
Or that dark gift of sudden yieldsC
Won from her golden sandsB
-
But men have scorned her worthier prideD
In rich and fruitful soilE
And spreading desolation wideD
Ranged all her verdant countrysideD
To ravage and despoilE
And now grey wastes of tortured earthF
Await the glory of rebirthF
Thro' nature's patient toilE
-
She has the wish she has the willE
To gather beauty roundG
Though gold's fierce lure stays with her stillE
She lives to plan and strive untilE
Springs from this barren groundG
Earth's only treasure scorned of yoreH
And smiling verdure clothes once moreH
Full many a bare bleak moundG
-
She guards the gateway of the northI
The broad lands of the sunJ
Hospitably her hand goes forthI
Eager to vindicate the worthF
Of happier tasks begunJ
And in gay gardens to expressK
A newer urge to lovelinessK
And kinder virtues wonJ
-
A virile lass in no wise strangeL
Of true Australian breedM
Where drab days into sunlight chargeN
Across the Great Dividing RangeL
She scatters now the seedM
That shall bring yields a thousandfoldM
When gardens count for more than goldM
And peace outvalues greedM
