Anzac Eve Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCD EFEFDD GBGBHH IJIKLL

For some it was the last sun that should setA
For many their last glimpse of fecund dayB
A splendid sun dipping reluctant yetA
Into blue water west of Mudros BayB
And they new burnished coin to squander freeC
In 'that red purchase' on GallipoliD
-
They guessed not or half guessing did not reckE
That for the doomed no other sun should riseF
But to reveal the still forms that would fleckE
The Anzac Beach staring with lifeless eyesF
Where carrier pigeons white against the blueD
Bore the dread tale for other skies they knewD
-
They sang they laughed and laughing cursed againG
The long monotony of Mudros BayB
Like hounds released the eager shouting menG
Crowded the decks and whiled the time awayB
At cards half fearing what they most desiredH
Might be denied them yet and no shot firedH
-
And as that sun set in the azure vastI
Who counted one day more or one day lessJ
How many deemed it was for them the lastI
To light a world of blood and bitternessK
Yet bitterness for many a heart lay thereL
When next the sun blazed over Sari BairL
