Rhyme Scheme: AAAB ACAD EAEA FGF AAAA EHEI J AEAE EAEA AKA LMLM ANA KOKO BJB AAAA A AD AAAA AAAA EAEA ABAB PAPA AAAA AEA MDADThere's been fierce argument of late | A |
In my vicinitee | A |
Between the Commonwealth and State | A |
For I fell out with me | B |
- | |
I am a sturdy Federalist | A |
A staunch Australian | C |
And I have waved an angry fist | A |
At me the States' Rights man | D |
- | |
The argument began like this | E |
I to myself one night | A |
Remarked 'There's something sore amiss | E |
That cries to be put right | A |
- | |
'This argument 'twixt Commonwealth | F |
And State must cease 'tis plain | G |
'Tis interfering with my health | F |
And rending me in twain ' | - |
- | |
'Then as a free ' myself replied | A |
'Elector of the State | A |
I hold my Rights can't be denied | A |
And I've been wronged of late | A |
- | |
'The Commonwealth's extravagance' | E |
'Hold on ' I said 'hold on | H |
A fool could tell you at a glance | E |
Where all the money's gone | I |
- | |
'Of late the States' expenditure | J |
Has risen high and higher ' | - |
'What rot ' me thought 'That's pretty pure ' | - |
Then shouted 'I'm a liar ' | - |
- | |
I rose to smite the Fed'ralist | A |
And what do you suppose | E |
I found with my avenging fist | A |
The States' Rights person's nose | E |
- | |
And yet it did seem strange because | E |
Though truly as I've said | A |
I hit the State elector 'twas | E |
The Federal nose that bled | A |
- | |
- | |
'See here ' I said 'this game won't do | A |
We'll have to stop and think | K |
There's something wrong with me and you | A |
Let's go and have a drink ' | - |
- | |
We entered without further hitch | L |
A pub across the way | M |
And had a single drink for which | L |
We both appeared to pay | M |
- | |
'Enough of this ' the States' man brayed | A |
'You asked me over here | N |
To have a drink and when I've paid | A |
You drink the bloomin' beer ' | - |
- | |
'Nay ' quoth the Fed'ralist 'I think | K |
You err To me 'tis clear | O |
I paid the money for the drink | K |
And you consumed the beer | O |
- | |
'I don't know what you are to me | B |
A foe or friend or brother | J |
To settle it I think I we | B |
YOU better have another ' | - |
- | |
We had another Then we sat | A |
Awhile morose and mute | A |
Then drifted into friendly chat | A |
About our late dispute | A |
- | |
'I think I see a point we've missed | A |
And that suggests a plan ' | - |
At length said I the Fed'ralist | A |
To Me the States' Rights man | D |
- | |
'It may seem strange to you at first | A |
We both wear one same hat | A |
We have one coat one shirt one thirst | A |
Why should we stop at that | A |
- | |
'To buy two drinks to quench one thirst | A |
Is utterly absurd | A |
Unless of course you're on a burst | A |
Or jag excuse the word | A |
- | |
'But since we're one in thirst and dress | E |
Why not be one in view | A |
I can't see why we don't possess | E |
But one opinion too | A |
- | |
'For I begin to think 'tis true | A |
Whatever else we be | B |
That while I'm virtually you | A |
You're practically me | B |
- | |
'We're both one man It's all a fake | P |
You're me and I am you | A |
Though politicians try to make | P |
Us think that we are two | A |
- | |
'And if a thing suits one it should | A |
Quite clearly suit the two | A |
And if this Federation's good | A |
For me it's good for you | A |
- | |
''Tis folly that we two should fight | A |
And wrangle and abuse | E |
So seeing things in this new light | A |
It's up to us to fuse ' | - |
- | |
We fose forthwith I'm pleased to say | M |
We're now a single man | D |
And that man is from now alway | A |
A good Austral i an | D |
