There's been fierce argument of lateA
In my viciniteeA
Between the Commonwealth and StateA
For I fell out with meB
-
I am a sturdy FederalistA
A staunch AustralianC
And I have waved an angry fistA
At me the States' Rights manD
-
The argument began like thisE
I to myself one nightA
Remarked 'There's something sore amissE
That cries to be put rightA
-
'This argument 'twixt CommonwealthF
And State must cease 'tis plainG
'Tis interfering with my healthF
And rending me in twain '-
-
'Then as a free ' myself repliedA
'Elector of the StateA
I hold my Rights can't be deniedA
And I've been wronged of lateA
-
'The Commonwealth's extravagance'E
'Hold on ' I said 'hold onH
A fool could tell you at a glanceE
Where all the money's goneI
-
'Of late the States' expenditureJ
Has risen high and higher '-
'What rot ' me thought 'That's pretty pure '-
Then shouted 'I'm a liar '-
-
I rose to smite the Fed'ralistA
And what do you supposeE
I found with my avenging fistA
The States' Rights person's noseE
-
And yet it did seem strange becauseE
Though truly as I've saidA
I hit the State elector 'twasE
The Federal nose that bledA
-
-
'See here ' I said 'this game won't doA
We'll have to stop and thinkK
There's something wrong with me and youA
Let's go and have a drink '-
-
We entered without further hitchL
A pub across the wayM
And had a single drink for whichL
We both appeared to payM
-
'Enough of this ' the States' man brayedA
'You asked me over hereN
To have a drink and when I've paidA
You drink the bloomin' beer '-
-
'Nay ' quoth the Fed'ralist 'I thinkK
You err To me 'tis clearO
I paid the money for the drinkK
And you consumed the beerO
-
'I don't know what you are to meB
A foe or friend or brotherJ
To settle it I think I weB
YOU better have another '-
-
We had another Then we satA
Awhile morose and muteA
Then drifted into friendly chatA
About our late disputeA
-
'I think I see a point we've missedA
And that suggests a plan '-
At length said I the Fed'ralistA
To Me the States' Rights manD
-
'It may seem strange to you at firstA
We both wear one same hatA
We have one coat one shirt one thirstA
Why should we stop at thatA
-
'To buy two drinks to quench one thirstA
Is utterly absurdA
Unless of course you're on a burstA
Or jag excuse the wordA
-
'But since we're one in thirst and dressE
Why not be one in viewA
I can't see why we don't possessE
But one opinion tooA
-
'For I begin to think 'tis trueA
Whatever else we beB
That while I'm virtually youA
You're practically meB
-
'We're both one man It's all a fakeP
You're me and I am youA
Though politicians try to makeP
Us think that we are twoA
-
'And if a thing suits one it shouldA
Quite clearly suit the twoA
And if this Federation's goodA
For me it's good for youA
-
''Tis folly that we two should fightA
And wrangle and abuseE
So seeing things in this new lightA
It's up to us to fuse '-
-
We fose forthwith I'm pleased to sayM
We're now a single manD
And that man is from now alwayA
A good Austral i anD
