All Fools' Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFHIHI JKJKLMLMNow is the day when arrant fools | A |
Play outworn tricks on sober men | B |
But for the thoughtful soul that schools | A |
His mind to conning o'er again | B |
Past folly that he may see clear | C |
Faults of commission and neglect | D |
This is the day in all the year | C |
For help inducing retrospect | D |
- | |
Myself when young and confident | E |
Walked ever proudly on my way | F |
With eyes set onward as I went | G |
I gave small heed to yesterday | F |
But growing old the once bright star | H |
Waned to a faint and sickly flame | I |
So faint I'd turn and gaze afar | H |
For help along the way I came | I |
- | |
A chastening exercise for me | J |
This yearly task of harking back | K |
For what a piteous fool I see | J |
Comes tumbling up that thorny track | K |
I would cast ashes on my head | L |
Did consolation not recall | M |
That in the end when all is said | L |
Both young and old well aren't we all | M |
