Because a little vagrant wind veered south from China SeaA
Or else because a sun spot stirred and yet again maybeA
Because some idle god in play breathed on an errant cloudB
The heads of twice two million folk in gratitude are bowedB
-
Patter patter BoolconmattaB
Adelaide and OodnadattaB
Pepegoona parched and dryC
Laugh beneath a dripping skyC
Riverina's thirsting plainD
Knows the benison of rainD
Ararat and ArkaroolaE
Render thanks with TantanoolaE
For the blessings they are gainingF
And it's raining raining rainingF
-
Because a heaven sent monsoon the mists before it droveG
Because things happened in the moon or else because High JoveG
Unbending played at waterman to please a laughing boyH
The hearts through all a continent are raised in grateful joyH
-
Weeps the sky at WipipeeI
Far Farina's folk are dippyI
With sheer joy while BallaratB
Shouts and flings aloft its hatB
Thirsty Thackaringa yellsJ
Taltabooka gladly tellsJ
Of a season wet and windyB
Men rejoice on MurrindindieB
Kalioota's ceased complainingF
For it's raining raining rainingF
-
Because a poor bush parson prayed an altruistic prayerK
Rich with unselfish fellow love that Heaven counted rareK
And yet mayhap because one night a meteor was hurledB
Across the everlasting blue the luck was with our worldB
-
On the wilds of WinininnieD
Cattle low and horses whinnyD
Frolicking with sheer delightB
From Beltana to The BightB
In the Mallee's sun scorched townsL
In the sheds on Darling DownsL
In the huts at YudnapinnaD
Tents on TidnacoordininnaD
To the sky all heads are craningF
For it's raining raining rainingF
-
Because some strange cyclonic thing has happened God knows whereK
Men dream again of easy days of cash to spend and spareK
The ring fair Clara coveted Belinda's furs are nighG
As clerklings watch their increments fall shining from the skyG
Rolls the thunder at EudundaB
Leongatha Boort KapundaB
Send a joyous message downD
Sorrows flooded sink and drownD
Ninkerloo and Nerim SouthM
Hail the breaking of the drouthM
From Toolangi's wooded mountainsN
Sounds the song of plashing fountainsN
Sovereign Summer's might is waningF
It is raining raining rainingF
-
Because the breeze blew sou' by east across the China SeaB
Or else because the thing was willed through all eternityB
By gods that rule the rushing stars or gods long aeons deadB
The earth is made to smile again and living things are fedB
-
Mile on mile from MallacootaB
Runs the news and far BarootaB
Speeds it over hill and plainD
Till the slogan of the rainD
Rolls afar to YankalillaE
Wallaroo and WirrawillaE
Shout it o'er the leagues betweenD
Telling of the dawning greenD
Frogs at Cocoroc are croakingF
Booboorowie soil is soakingF
Oodla Wirra OrrorooK
Breathe relief and hope anewD
Wycheproof and WollongongF
Catch the burden of the songF
That is rolling rolling everK
O'er the plains of Never NeverK
Sounding in each mountain rillE
Echoing from hill to hillE
In the lonely silent placesO
Men lift up their glad wet facesO
And their thanks ask no explainingF
It is raining raining rainingF
