Rhyme Scheme: AAAABBCCDDEEFFGGHHII DDJJKKLLMMGGAANNGGGG DDAAGGOPQQRRSSTTDDUU VVGG

In ev'ry age and each professionA
Men err the most by prepossessionA
But when the thing is clearly shownA
And fairly stated fully knownA
We soon applaud what we derideB
And penitence succeeds to prideB
A certain Baron on a dayC
Having a mind to show awayC
Invited all the wits and wagsD
Foot Massey Shuter Yates and SkeggsD
And built a large commodious stageE
For the Choice Spirits of the ageE
But above all among the restF
There came a Genius who profess'dF
To have a curious trick in storeG
Which never was perform'd beforeG
Thro' all the town this soon got airH
And the whole house was like a fairH
But soon his entry as he madeI
Without a prompter or paradeI
'Twas all expectance all suspenseD
And silence gagg'd the audienceD
He hid his head behind his wigJ
With with such truth took off a PigJ
All swore 'twas serious and no jokeK
For doubtless underneath his cloakK
He had conceal'd some grunting elfL
Or was a real hog himselfL
A search was made no pig was foundM
With thund'ring claps the seats resoundM
And pit and box and galleries roarG
With O rare bravo and EncoreG
Old Roger Grouse a country clownA
Who yet knew something of the townA
Beheld the mimic and his whimN
And on the morrow challeng'd himN
Declaring to each beau and bunterG
That he'd out grunt th'egregious grunterG
The morrow came the crowd was greaterG
But prejudice and rank ill natureG
Usurp'd the minds of men and wenchesD
Who came to hiss and break the benchesD
The mimic took his usual stationA
And squeak'd with general approbationA
Again encore encore they cryG
'Twas quite the thing 'twas very highG
Old Grouse conceal'd amidst the racketO
A real Pig berneath his jacketP
Then forth he came and with his nailQ
He pinch'd the urchin by the tailQ
The tortur'd Pig from out his throatR
Produc'd the genuine nat'ral noteR
All bellow'd out 'Twas very sadS
Sure never stuff was half so badS
That like a Pig each cry'd in scoffT
Pshaw Nonsense Blockhead Off Off OffT
The mimic was extoll'd and GrouseD
Was hiss'd and catcall'd from the houseD
Soft ye a word before I goU
Quoth honest Hodge and stooping lowU
Produc'd the Pig and thus aloudV
Bespoke the stupid partial crowdV
Behold and learn from this poor creatureG
How much you Critics know of NatureG
