Psalm 114 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL MNMN OPOP

When Israel came from Egypt s coastA
And Goshen s marshy plainsB
And Jacob with his joyful hostA
From servitude and chainsB
-
Then was it seen how much the JewsC
Were holy in his sightD
And God did Israel s kingdom chooseC
To manifest his mightD
-
The sea beheld it and with dreadE
Retreated to make wayF
And Jordan to his fountain headE
Ran backwards in dismayF
-
The mountains like the rams that boundG
Exulted on their baseH
Like lambs the little hills aroundG
Skipt lightly from their placeH
-
What is the cause thou mighty seaI
That thou thyself should shunJ
And Jordan what is come to theeI
That thou should backward runJ
-
Ye mountains that ye leaped so highK
From off the solid rockL
Ye hills that ye should gambols tryK
Like firstlings of the flockL
-
Earth from the center to the sodM
His fearful presence hailN
The presence of Jeshurun s GodM
In whom our arms prevailN
-
Who beds of rocks in pools to standO
Can by his word compelP
And from the veiny flint commandO
The fountain and the wellP
